BRAC Is Creating Potentially Massive Traffic Problems
unhappycamper note: Since the ‘Pentagon’ (DoD? Gannett?) has ‘requested’ that I only post one paragraph from articles on Army Times, and Airforce Times, To keep in that same (new) tradition, I will also do the same for for articles on Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, stripes.com and military.com.

Traffic backs up Dec. 6 near Fort Belvoir, Va., on Pohick Road, near Tully Gate, at the intersection with Richmond Highway (Route 1). Pohick Road is being widened from two to four lanes as part of a BRAC-related construction project, but that alone won’t be enough to cope with an influx of 37,000 soldiers, employees and dependents on the post.

The report, issued Feb. 7 by the National Academy of Sciences, calls on lawmakers and the Defense Department to support rescue funding for near-term transportation projects that could ease the growing gridlock around and through some of nation’s most prominent military bases.

1. Same thing has happened at other military bases when the new people arrived

One of the hidden costs of consolidation is that the receiving facility and the surrounding area will need to update infrastructure. Nothing new about it.
