Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 5, Part 6 (MASSIVE Crackdown ALL over Libya now!)

Previous Day 5 threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

The Gates of Hell Have Opened in Tripoli

Posted on 02/21/2011 by Juan

I am watching Aljazeera Arabic, which is calling people in Tripoli on the telephone and asking them what is going on in the capital. The replies are poignant in their raw emotion, bordering on hysteria. The residents are alleging that the Qaddafi regime has scrambled fighter jets to strafe civilian crowds, has deployed heavy artillery against them, and has occupied the streets with armored vehicles and strategically-placed snipers. One man is shouting that “the gates of Hell have opened” in the capital and that “this is Halabja!” (where Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein ordered helicopter gunships to hit a Kurdish city with sarin gas, killing 5000 in 1988).

Two defecting Libyan pilots who flew to Malta confirmed the orders to strafe the crowds from the air and said that they declined to obey the order. Other pilots appear to have been more loyal.

YouTube video shows buildings on fire or burned out in the capital, or with holes in the walls, evidence of violence through the night and into the morning. There are reports of a massacre of protesters in the central Green Square of Tripoli, with “too many bodies to count.”

Aljazeera English has some video:

The Middle East is really on a tight-rope as are future relations with USA and other western nations.

I reccomend the book "A Peace to end All Peace - The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and Creation of the Modern Middle East" by David Fromkin.

29. This will probably be a very unpopular post
but I'm concerned that Libya without Khaddafi will be a far worse place than Libya under Khaddafi.

I've been to Libya. It truly is a tribal country, with warring clans that believe in absolute male dominance. Ironically enough, Khaddafi is far more liberal than his countrymen when it comes to women's rights. While in Tripoli, I spoke with women university students who laughed and conversed freely with their male classmates. Yes, they wore headscarves, but their faces were uncovered and they seemed relaxed and at ease with us. Khaddafi, in fact, uses women as his personal bodyguards because he trusts women more than men. He has faced resistance from Bedouin tribes precisely because they dislike his relatively liberal attitude toward women's rights.

If Khaddafi is overthrown, I fear that tribal influences will predominate and women will find their lives much worse.

47. There is always the possibility that things will get worse when a regime changes
Like in Afghanistan. Were the women better off under warring tribes or the Taliban? However, I do not think this is the right topic to express this in as it is about what is going on as far as the revolution, overthrow, slaughter, etc.

I'm only trying to offer a sober assessment of what the future might hold. During the Russian revolution, I'm sure that it was similarly impossible to discuss the sad possibilities. In the heat of revolution, common sense sometimes gets trampled.

64. There's no point. Minds are closed.
I just thought that, as one who's familiar with Libya, I might have something to share. But after getting called an asshole and told to fuck off, it's clear no one wants to hear anything that tarnishes the vision of the Libyan paradise that will follow this revolution.

not in discussing the opinion you keep trying to insert here in a separate topic.

Try later, or post another topic about it. Having a discussion about how things can be, if they are better or not, is fine. Just not the right time or place here. Rather like putting a rant into a topic about someone being killed.

83. We initiated the "sad possibilities" in Iraq by toppling Saddam
"Fuck you" was Cheney's response to those of us who were worried about a post-Saddam Iraq.

I'm sorry to say that I was right about what would happen in Iraq after Saddam was gone.

And now that I'm trying to think a few chess moves ahead of this horrifying situation in Libya, I'm getting the "fuck you" once again, right here. Just for being concerned about what the future holds for Libyan women under complete tribal control.

Liberal, my ass. It looked like he had softened up for a time. But now, fuck him.

(Offtopic, Firefox recommended that spelling for Qaddafi.)

The Ambassador of France in Tunisia defended Gaddafi

Libya is beset by violent clashes between protesters and the army. Some rumors even claim that Colonel Gaddafi, in power for 32 years, trying to reach Venezuela . In France, the controversy surrounding France's ambassador to Tunisia, Boris Boillon, continues to swell . After being seen on the site of "the boys before", shirtless and abdominal air , our Youth Ambassador also considered rude remarks about the Tunisian Journalists. The website The Post has unearthed this morning an extract more than an embarrassment for French diplomacy.

If Nicolas Sarkozy was greeted Colonel Gaddafi in a more than respectable, Boris Boillon had faroucheme nt supported during his visit on the set of Grand Journal de Canal + , implying that the terrorist past of Libyan dictator was " a mistake ". Within months, the French government has accumulated diplomatic blunders , even degrading its relations with Mexico in particular. If Le Pen had only to demand the resignation of Boris Boillon yesterday evening, the announcement of further slippage is likely to increase the number of its detractors.

Burned bodies found in Benghazi Army Barracks

This is about the soldiers who were savagely slaughtered then burned by Qaddafi's thugs for refusing to shoot their unarmed civilians on the first day of the protests.
