Great quote on Huff post
Not all South Carolinians supported secession. About 57 percent of the state's 703,000 residents in 1860 were slaves. A few white opponents spoke out, including lawyer and politician James Petigru, whose famous quote still echoes through his home state today:

"South Carolina is too small to be a Republic, and too large to be an insane asylum."

1. As a long time resident of South Carolina...
...I could not agree more with Petigru's quote. These people ARE insane. Most of 'em, anyway, including the jackass Tweety had on his show last night. He claimed it had "nothing to do with slavery." Yeah, sure. That's why in the very first sentence the Declaration of Secession, it mentions "slaveholding states." It goes on to mention "slaveholding states" AND "slavery" multiple times thereafter. I guess this ignorant schmuck never read it.
