put on your dropcloth and ask them why it's okay for the almighty Private Sector to do it that way, but not the public education system.

That's just one of the chances you take when you go to work ANYWHERE. If there's a downturn in business and someone's got to be put on part-time hours, temporarily laid off or terminated completely, Old Frank, who's been there forty years, isn't going to be let go, Jerry out on the loading dock, who got hired a month ago, will be. (In part because the boss knows the first thing Old Frank did when he got here was copy off the boss's Rolodex...)

1. Actually, in private sector, it is often the more senior employees that are fired first
The older, more highly paid employees are let go first to the extent that management thinks they can get away with it without an age discrimination lawsuit.

3. sad but true and thats really why they want it for teachers
Fire the highest paid and replace them with cheaper newbies. It has nothing to do with performance, anymore than it does in the private sector with MBA bean counters firing people to goose the quarterly profits.

4. Happened to many of my friends...
Turned 50 and after 25 years of working, they were moved to a different department. Then could not keep up and wer let go.

Tom my friend had this happen to him last month.
