REPORT: 88,000 People Are Missing In Japan

Joe Weisenthal | Mar. 11, 2011, 10:06 AM | 22,739 | comment 30

Heartbreaking: While the death toll remains in the low hundreds right now (officially) it seems sure to spiral much higher.

According to the Kyodo News Agency, via BBC, the official missing persons tally is around 88,000.

It's well known that a lot of people are simply stranded in the cities, including Tokyo, and in many cases the people are probaby safe. It's not clear how they're included in the number.

1. The large majority of them are fine, but a tiny minority of that majority's still horrifying.

3. I work for a large international
corporation. Hundreds of our employees in Japan had to spend the night at the office(s) because there was no operating/functioning public transportation to take them home. They were all safe though.

4. It's been updated
to say the estimate is overstated.

Another news aggregator says the same:

5. Okinawa?
I'm going to be posting this on a few of these threads, so I apologize in advance. My d-i-l has stopped answering my texts and my son isn't answering his phone. I'm stuck at work and can't search on this crappy computer and links crash.

Has anyone heard anything about Okinawa? Extended family and friends there, some on the smaller islands. Most of our mainland friends and family have been accounted for.

I sincerely appreciate, with all my heart, any information anyone has.

6. Finally!!
Family is okay. Okinawa is fine. My d-i-l is crying tears of joy. Me, too. We're going to enjoy this brief moment of relief before we revisit the reality.

11. Thank you!
This is why I never had more children. I worry...about everything...non-stop.

Cute side note: Natsumi, my d-i-l, called her mom just a bit ago (7am Japan). Her mother answered the phone and said, "You woke me up!!"

AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Now I know where she gets her sense of humor from!
