Plan to protect teachers with liability insurance clears committee
MONTGOMERY – A bill that would require the state to provide professional liability insurance to teachers and other education personnel got one step closer to becoming law today, as the House Education Ways and Means Committee today voted it out with a favorable report.
The Teacher and Education Employee Protection Act, sponsored by State Representative Jay Love, will finally allow the state to protect teachers from potential financial ruin resulting from a lawsuit. Under existing law, the state does not offer this basic protection to education workers, even though the state currently offers the same protection to non-education state employees.
“The state has always offered liability protection to state employees, and it’s time we extend the same protection to our teachers,” Representative Love said. “No teacher should be forced to join an organization and pay dues out of fear of being financially ruined by a lawsuit. This is a basic service of state government, and it’s something our teachers absolutely deserve.”
House Speaker Mike Hubbard, who has sponsored similar legislation in previous years, thanked Representative Love for his work on the bill.
