Mixed race couples on the rise in the South..

:toast:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/us/20race.html?_r=3&pagewanted=1&hp

the nation’s mixed-race population is growing far more quickly than many demographers had estimated, particularly in the South and parts of the Midwest..

In North Carolina, the mixed-race population doubled. In Georgia, it expanded by more than 80 percent, and by nearly as much in Kentucky and Tennessee. In Indiana, Iowa and South Dakota, the multiracial population increased by about 70 percent.

“Anything over 50 percent is impressive,” said William H. Frey, a sociologist and demographer at the Brookings Institution. “The fact that even states like Mississippi were able to see a large explosion of residents identifying as both black and white tells us something that people would not have predicted 10 or 20 years ago.”

Census officials were expecting a national multiracial growth rate of about 35 percent since 2000, when seven million people — 2.4 percent of the population — chose more than one race. Officials have not yet announced a national growth rate, but it seems sure to be closer to 50 percent.

2. I commonly see black man/white woman couple but rarely black woman/white man.
Not that it matters for anything but it does make me wonder why it isn't close to 50/50.

6. I hear you. Why is that so weird?
I think there are class/gender/sexual ideal issues still unresolved.

Oh but god forbid we bring this up!

10. My neighbor is a black man, white woman couple.
This report is news only to those that don't live in the south.

I think the whole thing is good news. Let the KKK, white whatever-the-opposite-of-supremacist is, racists and bigots suck on that stat!

12. My wife's cousin (white; from deep south) is dating a black woman (Atlanta) with two kids.

They are very serious.

Has anyone else also noticed the number of inter-racial couples in commercials (mainly auto)? It makes me smile every time I see one.

7. But why so few white man/black woman couples?
It really is a valid question, I think.

13. Psssst. Think about the racial history of this country.
There was a time when black woman had no say whatsoever. Get it?

9. This is good - I teach, and the kids, even in a very white area
are pretty open-minded about mixed race couples. The more people of different backgrounds they actually get to know, the less fear there will be.
