Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 07:26 PM by KansDem
When I think of "cockroaches," I think:

The Lives and Times of Archy and Mehitabel

the lesson of the moth, by Don Marquis

i was talking to a moth
the other evening
he was trying to break into
an electric light bulb
and fry himself on the wires
why do you fellows
pull this stunt i asked him
because it is the conventional
thing for moths or why
if that had been an uncovered
candle instead of an electric
light bulb you would
now be a small unsightly cinder
have you no sense
plenty of it he answered
but at times we get tired
of using it
we get bored with the routine
and crave beauty
and excitement
fire is beautiful
and we know that if we get
too close it will kill us
but what does that matter
it is better to be happy
for a moment
and be burned up with beauty
than to live a long time
and be bored all the while
so we wad all our life up
into one little roll
and then we shoot the roll
that is what life is for
it is better to be a part of beauty
for one instant and then cease to
exist than to exist forever
and never be a part of beauty
our attitude toward life
is come easy go easy
we are like human beings
used to be before they became
too civilized to enjoy themselves
and before i could argue him
out of his philosophy
he went and immolated himself
on a patent cigar lighter
i do not agree with him
myself i would rather have
half the happiness and twice
the longevity
but at the same time i wish
there was something i wanted
as badly as he wanted to fry himself

archy

on edit: Bedbugs are creepy...

19. Also invaded by people who accidentally un-rec
I wish the "rec" and "unrec" buttons were further apart. I didn't un-rec this thread, but have un-recced others without meaning to, no doubt setting off countless conspiracy theories.

(and, lest you think I don't believe there are any trollers anywhere, I just this morning emailed my public radio station, asking the producers why a teacher from Kentucky was calling in to a Philadelphia radio program in the middle of a school day to say how wonderful her life in Kentucky was, teaching without those pesky unions. I suggested that perhaps calls from out of the area might be driven by something other than an honest interest in contributing to the conversation).

All I'm saying is that here on DU, the un-rec button is WAY to close to the "rec" button...

If all threads get unrecced, then all threads maintain the same prioritization as if no rec or unrec happened. Now if they start reccing really useless and inane threads while unreccing important threads, then that will have more of an affect...but they seem to just auto-unrec everything thereby drowning their influence.

That's how you know she's being effective - Good job, Rachel!

Last week, she was upsetting people in the Obama administration (Dept of Energy, I believe) about approving new leases to drill in the Gulf. She had received some very VERY unhappy phone calls, but she was standing by her story.

She's getting noticed alright! I love that she's ruffling feathers. People are recognizing that she's a force to be reckoned with. I'm just so happy she's on our side.

24. another point about pronounciation
apparently Rachel has never driven over the Mackinack bridge. It is the people of Michigan who, apparently, pronounce Mackinack as Mackinaw. So she may think she is insulting the organization by mispronouncing their name, but she is really insulting the people of Michigan.

Also, I have been pronouncing the name LaFollette as Lafall-it, instead of as she did La-Fo-let. Presumably she is doing it right since she actually talked to the guy whereas I, even though I lived in Wisconsin for about a decade, have only read about his famous ancestor in history books. But we always called it the Mackinack bridge too and not the Mackinaw.

43. I also grew up in Brew City
Whenever I heard the name on the news it was, (at the time), Bronson LaFoll' et.

I must presume that this is a case of good Wisconsin manners not correcting the host!

I also believe it is a purposeful mispronunciation of the asshats to earn the Mackinack deignation. Mackinaw would show even the slightest respect which this group has not earned.

She does have some problems with Wisconsin names and cities though.

58. And Keith and Rachel, as far as I know, have been the only people to mention ALEC on
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 10:31 PM by highplainsdem
MSNBC. Keith mentioned it in early January, a couple of weeks before he left. Link to the reply in my compilation topic on ALEC which quotes what Keith said then:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x591230#592643

Here's the topic I posted yesterday about Rachel's name being mentioned in that FOIA request:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x769143

Rachel was wondering aloud on last night's show about the Mackinac Center possibly including her name because she'd mentioned them as being behind the EFM, emergency financial manager, legislation in Michigan. But the other search terms point toward Wisconsin and ALEC. The Mackinac Center works closely with ALEC, and I think they're just helping with the witch hunt that started after Professor Cronon posted his blog about ALEC and the WI GOP demanded his emails.

Republicans love witch hunts...

ALL universities need to pull out of right wing radio - and a quick check turned up that 15/16 teams in the final 16 NCAA bball tourney broadcast on at least one limbaugh station- all of which do anti-science global warming denial.

71. I'm with you on the
"their samson's hair is their right wing radio monopoly."

As crazy as it might sound to many DUers, Limbaugh's words morph into reality for millions of listeners and listener's acquaintances. I say listener's acquaintances because any time a Limbaugh listener has a discussion about the economy, the war, terrorism, unions, liberals or Obama, that listener is going to parrot the words of misinformation that he heard from Limbaugh. And this phenomenon is repeated millions of times.

This endless repetition even affects the mentality of left of center citizens that have NEVER listened to Limbaugh. The reason for this is because these convoluted Limbaugh directives eventually work their way into popular culture.

the fact that virtually all the RW regulars are on the same page from the heritage foundation is another factor- it's a lot more persuasive when the next five blowhards repeat the same meme with their own flavor- how can it be a lie?

They have come after every sane entity in America so they can have a country full of batshit crazy people following like the pied piper, it wouldn't be long before they got to fucking with Universities and colleges and it Professors and educational staff. They don't want any form of intelligent life existing on the planet. therefore, Ms. Maddow would be a considerable threat. She thinks!!!And she teaches the people that watch her to think based on the information and not speculation. Although, you may speculate based on information.
