Eleven states are investigating creation of a state-owned bank on the North Dakota model
Edited on Wed Apr-20-11 05:23 AM by Hannah Bell
However, 11 states have decided enough is enough; they have introduced legislation for publicly owned banks or derivations, or for studies or task forces to determine how a publicly owned bank would operate in their jurisdiction. In one of the 11 states, Massachusetts, the commission is already in force.
Here are the states:

1. Illinois
2. Virginia
3. Hawaii
4. Louisiana
5. Oregon
6. Washington State
7. Massachusetts
8. Maryland
9. Arizona
10. Vermont
11. California

4. A state bank is NOT intended as a competitor to commercial banks
In ND, the state bank partners with community banks to make loans that the community banks would otherwise not be able to make. There are two criteria. The first is that the loan must make sense from a banking standpoint. The second is that it create jobs or support businesses in ND.
