San Francisco selected to host America's Cup

(12-31) 16:45 PST San Francisco -- San Francisco will host the next America's Cup, race organizers said today, heralding a potential renaissance in the sport of sailing and a major boon to the local economy.

"We sought a venue that fulfills our promise - to showcase the best sailors in the world competing on the fastest boats," said Richard Worth, a race official. "And hosting the America's Cup in San Francisco will realize that promise."

Pretty much says it all where we are as a nation as we turn the page to the next year.

We have lost and they have won. Handily. It's a wonderful time to be a Bush Billionaire. I would suspect the best jobs coming are building gates for communities, because that is where we are headed, or already are: A few incredibly rich manipulating tea partiers and the rest of us clinging to what we have left.

Me, either. I have sailed for years on the Great Lakes. But this isn't about sailing on a 30-footer on the Great Lakes that you worked hard for. This is all about the Joy of Wealth that returned to this nation during the Bush Administration that is now certified by "our" guy.

3. Cool! I'll have to get up there to see some of it. Interesting how it turns out to

be as much or more a real estate deal (long term pier leases) as it is event planning. Makes me wonder a bit if the short-term inflow to the city will be worth the long term cost.

I'm also curious how local boaters and commercial boat/ship operators feel about it - it could be a huge hassle to have a big chunk of the Bay blocked off for a race...

Cup competition has lost tv viewers since the cup left New Zealand. The change in venue to the USA is a thinly veiled attempt to make cup races relevant as sporting events again.
