Herbivore men

I thought this would be an interesting topic for here.
What is everyone's take on the Herbivore men in Japan?

Long short, they live almost simple lives.
They work enough to live on, but don't really pursue women, money, power, or fashion.

Kind of like a metrosexual but with less drive.

Is this a consequence of men being told by women they are no longer needed, and the media message to men saying they are either powerful or nothing?

do these young men see their lives as being in the middle...

"im not powerful, therefore im not needed or wanted..."

just curious.
personally i see it as a natural consequence.

2. I'm of two minds about this.
On the one hand, I think it's sad whenever anyone abandons the search for intimacy.

On the other hand, people take pride in raising their daughters "so that they won't need a man when they grow up." Why is the reverse phenomenon something to worry about? Maybe they're the liberated ones.

Either way, it suggests that modern people are beginning to think that basic human relationships are just too much work.

3. Or that advanced relationships are too much work
and after my divorce, im not sure how much i disagree with that idea.
of course im horribly biased, and a little scared.

I suppose it could also just be a japanese phenomenon based on their culture.

I wonder if this will take hold here.
