Sherlock *****
I just finished this very short mini series and loved it. I expect my purist Sherlockian friends will hate this – I haven't checked yet, but will be interested to hear their comments. I think the show is wonderful. They've taken the essence of Sherlock, the idiosyncratic sociopath, and moved him into a 21st century setting. They've made John Watson a real person rather than a bumbling idiot. There are some very clever techniques used to move the plot along without slowing down the action with excessive cuts. And the action is very fast-paced. It leaves you spinning on occasion, wondering what just happened. I think these are DVDs to own because you will get more out of them with each viewing. I look forward to the next installment.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock: Series 1
2010 NR 2 discs
This modern-day refresh of Sherlock Holmes has Arthur Conan Doyle's deductive genius (Benedict Cumberbatch) moving through London as a Web-adept consultant to Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves), and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) as an Afghan War vet who shares his Baker Street digs. Shedding the Victorian trappings but retaining the dark humor and clever wordplay, the opening season plunges Holmes into "A Study in Pink" and two other cases.

Cast:Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Loo Brealey, Rupert Graves, Zoe Telford, Vinette Robinson, Mark Gatiss Creator:Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat Genres:Television, British TV Dramas, TV Mysteries, TV Crime Dramas, British TV This show is:Cerebral, Exciting, Suspenseful, Witty Format:DVD

1. I watched the series online at the PBS web site and LOVED it!
I enjoyed how they kept the Baker Street apartment with the traditional layout and other little nods to past Holmes programs.

Haven't heard when the next episodes are coming, but I am assuming the (don't want to spoil it) ending of the last one guarantees there will be more.

2. The commentary on the last episode indicated there would be more.
I, too, loved the homage to the original Holmes stories. I loved the nicotine patches.

3. Awesome interpretation!
This version fires on all cylinders.

:applause:

I love the modern versions of the touches of the original... Sherlock as a tech geek, for example. And for probably the first time ever (except Jude Law) Watson is not a wimp.

I'm mad that I've only seen it once when they aired and Netflix doesn't have it yet. Boo. Hiss. x(

10. I got it from Netflix
Great series. And even my husband loved it and he's very partial to the books and Jeremy Brett's Sherlock.

4. My purist husband loved this, as did I. It was great making it modern, not having
the typical fogs, horses, etc etc etc. I will be happy when they put out more in the series. I watched them all once, am on my second time through to pick up what I missed the first time around. They could have very easily made this show awful but it is wonderful instead.

6. I really enjoyed the first and third episodes.
Episode two blew. Just complete failure, IMO.

8. Word is season 2 is being filmed now.
Scandal, The Hound and Reichenbach

Agree about Watson, fully realized character and perfectly portrayed by Freeman.
