One US soldier killed, two wounded in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier was killed and two were wounded in a roadside bombing near Iskandariyah, 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the Iraqi capital, a military spokesperson said.

"One US soldier was killed and two were wounded when their convoy was attacked with an improvised explosive device near Iskandariyah around 11 am (0700 GMT) today," the spokesperson said.

US soldiers shot an unknown number of suspects fleeing the scene, while the wounded troops were treated at a coalition military base, she added.

The death raises to 606 the number of US soldiers killed in action, according to numbers from the Pentagon (news - web sites), since the US military invaded Iraq (news - web sites) in March 2003.
