1066 and All That is a funny book, but not so much for academic use, imo.
There are so many texts, overviews, monographs . . . the answer really does depend on the age group you're working with right now.
The BBC has a pretty good website overview, here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/Lots of fun, interactive tools for kids, tweens, teens (and us grown-ups who like that sort of thing)
This is another overview website that's not bad at all:
http://www.britannia.com/history/A bit more wordy, but lots of information that might work for you in lieu of a book.
The Reader's Guide to British History is a fairly recent (2003), well organised and comprehensive annotated bibliography for books on British history. Two volumes, published by Routledge, editor David Loades. I suspect you would find it very useful for your search.
