You wonder if the people who think that anyone failing is responsible for their problems and their inability to get out is maybe a way to distance themselves and say both that their good actions are why they are ok - and that they will always be ok. Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is never easy and is impossible when there are no ladders left to use to climb out of the hole.
