Nice coverage in the Boston Globe on a head start program -
During his visit, Kerry read "Paddington Bear" to an enthusiastic group of preschoolers who frequently interrupted the narrative. He also met with parents and teachers who told him the program was invaluable.
<snip>
Kerry told the group of parents and teachers that he was a staunch supporter of Head Start, but that meeting with parents and teachers "clarifies things for me." He later called the Republican-led budget proposal "unconscionable" and "amoral."
In addition to hosting Head Start's daycare services for low-income children, the South End center is also home to an action center, which provides fuel assistance, English as a second language courses and summer jobs for teens.

(i had never seen her speak.) By the way, the Boston Globe may not have been paying attention to the important detail of which kids' book. The book, the senator put down (and many kids had copies) was Corduroy, which I estimate I read at least 100 times because my girls liked it.
(Big difference - Paddington Bear, from Peru, has Wellington Boots and is an elitist with a British accent - not Corduroy.
Corduroy is the story of a teddy bear who lives in a department store but is never bought. One day a little girl wants to buy him, but her mother points out that he is missing one of the buttons on his overalls. That night he decides to explore the department store in search of a button. He doesn't find a button, but the next day he does find love and a home.

Republican Sen. Scott Brown’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Head Start cuts.
The popular national program is designed to promote school readiness by "enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families," according to the federal Department of Health and Human Service’s website.
