The liberal Campaign for America’s Future condemned John Kerry’s selection because he dared to praise an earlier budget deal that would have included controls on the costs of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. You know, that vast and wildly expensive portion of the national budget some say shouldn’t be touched. CAF went after Max Baucus because they don’t like his votes on tax issues.
I have not read what CAF wrote, but I suspect that they were not too happy with the grand bargain, particularly given the lack of clarity president Obama gave about what he would accept. There are real issues there and pols should be careful about what they say. I actually hope this gets legs (pretty unhappy it is against Kerry), if anything to make clear that people are mobilized against cuts on Medicare, Medicaid, and SS.
