interstate highways put the nail in the coffin.
The rugged individualism myth was swallowed hook line and sinker. Only the lower class took the bus or rode the train. You were suspect if you were walking, thought a dimwit if you rode a bicycle. I remember walking past cars waiting at a stop light. I could hear the door locks clicking as I approached.
Now us rugged individuals have become slaves to the oil giants, and a ride on a train means an 80 mile one way trip by car to the nearest station, and a 4 AM departure two weeks from now.
