Baghdad (dpa) - U.S. Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld on Saturday blamed Iraqis for the poor state of security in U.S.- occupied Iraq.

Rumsfeld said Iraqis should be passing more information on the whereabouts of criminal and Baath party elements to the U.S. military instead of accusing coalition troops.

According to Rumsfeld, the relatively high level of crime and attacks were to be blamed on the general amnesty declared by Saddam Hussein last year, whereby 100,000 criminals were released from jails.

Rumsfeld also claimed that Baghdad and its surrounding provinces were relatively free of clashes compared to southern Iraq.
