The UK's BBC News reports that:
Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie has said she sympathises with the plight of Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith's wife Betsy. Mrs Duncan Smith has been at the centre of a political storm this week after claims that she did not do enough work to justify her salary as her husband's diary secretary. Parliamentary Commissioner of Standards Sir Philip Mawer is currently investigating the claims. Those claims have been robustly denied by Mr Duncan Smith, who blamed the claims on "cowards in the shadows" trying to get at him through his wife.
During a visit to Belfast Mrs Blair, who was wearing a glamorous red trouser suit, was asked if she sympathised with her shadow first lady's plight. She said: "I always feel sympathy with every woman who is trying to juggle a lot of tasks." And perhaps recalling her own difficulties during the long running Cheriegate affair over her purchase of property in Bristol, she added: "I have sympathy for anybody that is hounded by the press."
