Bank Statements Not Confidential Under Law

MADISON, Wis. -- Some voters in Tuesday's primary election could now be vulnerable to identity theft.
When residents cast their votes Tuesday, they had the option to show a bank statement or utility bill to register at the polls, if their current address wasn't on their driver's license.
By law, clerks have to record an associated number with that statement. Under Wisconsin law, a driver's license number, date of birth and Social Security number are all confidential.
But a bank account number is not. That means that if someone made an open records request to see your voter registration form, they could have access to your bank account number.
