Huckabee Stands by 'Christ' Comment
Source: Associated Press

Mike Huckabee, a Republican relying on support from religious conservatives in Thursday's hard-fought presidential caucuses, on Sunday stood by a decade-old comment in which he said, "I hope we answer the alarm clock and take this nation back for Christ."

In a television interview, the ordained Southern Baptist minister and former Arkansas governor made no apologies for the 1998 comment made at a Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Salt Lake City.

"It was a speech made to a Christian gathering, and, and certainly that would be appropriate to be said to a gathering of Southern Baptists," Huckabee said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He gave the speech the same year he endorsed the Baptist convention's statement of beliefs on marriage that "a wife is to submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ." Huckabee and his wife, Janet, signed a full-page ad in USA Today in support of the statement with 129 other evangelical leaders.

in the Oval Office, same as he did in his office as governor.
Doesn't believe in evolution, and thinks that the Commandments form the foundation of our system of laws.
That this man has even a half-way decent shot at the nomination chills me to the bone. :scared:

7. Who Cares If He Hangs The Ten Commandments
I am less concerned about him hanging the Ten Commandments in the Oval Office then in some of the other things he would try to do.

I mean, really, if you think about the ten commandments from a non believers perspective, they are inane at worst, but a lot of them are good stuff. Don't commit adultery. Don't steal. Don't lie. Don't covet. What's so bad about that?

It's actually believing that stuff that women must submit to their husbands I find especially galling. I really thought we'd moved past that, that even the religious people disavowed the women are inferior philosphy, like they've recently disavowed slavery.

29. The more significant issue is
1st, our laws are patterned after English Common Law that predates the introduction of Christianity to Great Britain.

2nd, of the 10 only 3 of the commandments are actually illegal in any state.

LEGAL
1. Though shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Though shalt not make unto thee any graven image (not even christians believe this one).
3. Though shalt not take the name of the lord in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy (again most christians ignore this as the Sabbath is Saturday).
5. Honor thy father and thy mother.
7. Though shalt not commit adaultery (That means you Giuliani).
10.Though shalt not covet. (Our society is virtually built upon violating this commandment).

ILLEGAL
6. Though shalt not kill.
8. Though shalt not not steal.
9. Though shalt not bear false witness.

Christians never seem to think about the religion they follow.

31. Not True
Adultery is illegal in several states, although rarely enforced in a criminal court. If it were, it would undoubtedly be challenged and the constitutionality of such laws would be called into question on privacy grounds. Although, if many of the Republicans have their way that could all change.

But that doesn't change the fact that in most circumstances, adultery is a violation of the trust a married person has in his/her partner. Sure there are exceptions, but in general an adulterer should be condemned - not for his/her sin against God but for the betrayal of a loved one.

As for honoring your father and mother - well, unless one's parents have been abusive or neglectful, they deserve to be honored and respected. Of course, how much this is rooted in Christian principles is questionable because Eastern cultures which are predominantly NOT Judeo-Christian seem to honor or respect their elderly a lot more than we do (at least, their elderly men).

Christians routinely make graven images - all those depictions of Jesus are a violation of the second commandment. All those renderings of Mary are too.

For the most part though, I think commandments 1 - 4 are pretty meaningless and the rest, whether illegal or not, are good rules by which to live.

35. The state I was born in used to have enforcement close to (4).
Edited on Mon Dec-31-07 01:23 AM by igil
(3) and (7), too.

For a total of 6 of them. Actions, of course--you could think blasphemous thoughts all you wanted, as long as you didn't do a number of public things.

(1) was tough to enforce, since there was a recent tradition of religious freedom among English speakers ... claimed by the sect dominant, for a while, in the state.

(2) was chucked out pretty much long ago by most--but not all--Xian sects. Then again, so was (4), but who's worrying about details.

(3) and (4) I mentioned; (5) is hard to figure out. "Honor" in what way--take care of them in their dotage? Obey them? Say nice things about them? Wash their feet?

(6), (7), (8), and (9) are covered. (10) is also hard to make illegal: Rather like "lusting in your heart", it's not something that can be easily or readily observed. But actions based on (10) tend to be fairly well universally illegal, at least for the common joe and are covered elsewhere in the 10.

So of the 10, (1), (2), (5) and strictly speaking (10) weren't covered. Let's see ... my church would kick out reprobate members, many are sort of mini-theocracies, and mine was. They enforced (2), well, would have if anybody actually made a graven image to worship it. Other than that, it was the same as used to be enforced in Maryland: sabbath-breaking, blasphemy, adultery, theft, murder.... Odd, that: A church enforcing doctrinal law and there's only one difference with how the state I was in did things ... judged acceptable under the US Constitution. It's just that these were state laws, not federal, so it varied a bit. But most states went along the same lines. It's really enforcement c. 1783 that you have to look at, not what's enforced today.

9. Wonder has Mike ever heard
of the Twelve Tables of Rome. Codified law long before JC ever went around turing water into wine detailing punishments and procedures that are, albeit at a basic level, similar to laws we have today(apart from one or two obvious ones). Or of the various constitutions that ancient greece employed that the Roman system was largely based upon. It always irks me when self righteous winguts parade around stating the world had no concept of morality or law before JC et al.

6. Lots of good stuff has been published recently...
about the dangers and agenda of the "Christian Nation" people on the Right...

I would submit the following excellent work (I just finished reading it over the holidays) for the same type of thinking which was popular with Progressive Christianity at the trime of the First World War:

The War for Righteousness: Progressive Christianity, the Great War, and the Rise of the Messianic Nation. by Richard M. Gamble

http://www.amazon.com/War-Righteousness-Progressive-Christianity-Messianic/dp/1932236163/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199058482&sr=1-3

I can't praise this book highly enough. While it is certain that the main assault on Church/State seperation has been coming from the Right over the last 4 decades, we need to remember that these assaults can also come, in different form, from the Progressive side of the aisle; Church/State seperation needs to be guarded against attack from whichever side it comes.

it bothers me that you think we need to take this country back FOR Christ. I wouldn't mind if you're infused with Christian morals and those morals inspire you to work to bring common good. It's so arrogant to think we need to be "saved". It's that stupid arrogance of religious people.

They all ran out of Jesus' words along time ago and just started making it all up after that. It makes for good theater.

My sister-in-law took my son to church one time when he was between one and two years old. (he was quite verbal and not in the least trained to be quiet in such places)
When it came time to pass around the collection plate at end of the service, he yelled out for all to hear, " YOU MEAN YOU HAVE TO PAY THESE GUYS?"

Oh yes my son, and well payed they are.
