Producers call on Ottawa to investigate beef pricingLast Updated Wed, 18 Feb 2004 23:50:40
CALGARY - Canadian beef producers have asked Ottawa to look into the continuing high cost of beef, saying meat packers and grocers are making a profit at their expense.
Throughout the mad cow crisis, the price of beef has hardly budged despite expectations it would fall. The lack of price change has upset some producers, who say they are continuing to lose money.
"We know a profit is going someplace and we want someone to investigate," said Anne Campbell-Kozaruk, a Saskatchewan beef producer.
In the past year, the price of sirloin steak has averaged between $13.76 and $14.65 per kilogram, compared to the $0.83 to $2.34 per kilogram producers receive for slaughter cattle.
