Job cuts likely in wireless merger - Mass layoffs expected, but insiders
think many at AT&T will keep jobs

REDMOND -- A day after learning their company will be sold for $41 billion to rival Cingular Wireless, more than 5,000 Eastside employees of AT&T Wireless Services are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Industry analysts expect the merger of the nation's second- and third-largest cell phone carriers to trigger significant job cuts at both companies.

But how many and where? What will happen to AT&T Wireless' headquarters at Redmond Town Center, where the company employs 2,500 workers and occupies nearly 600,000 square feet of space in six office buildings? And what about the company's 2,500 information technology and customer call-center workers in Bothell?
