Arnold's Budgets Don't Solve California's Fiscal Crisis

"Even if enacted precisely as prescribed, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget proposal would leave the state with a $7 billion budget hole in the 2005-06 fiscal year and "large operating shortfalls" for the next half-decade, Legislative Analyst Elizabeth Hill said Wednesday."

Gray Davis wasn't a particularly well-liked candidate and ahnold is a highly popular movie star who most apparently appeals to a lot of people.

When we received the notice to re-new the car registration, the envelope it came in had a message printed on it .... about the registration fee being lowered. About a month later, we received a refund of a small tidy sum from vehicle registration fee. Again, on the envelope, it advertised how are fee had been lowered. Such that, ahnold is even wasting money getting these especially printed envelopes. (I realize the envelope printing probably didn't cost much, but I thought it was offensive.

...are you saying the vehicle reg tax had been lowered from its standard amount before Davis's planned increase had kicked in? That would be as ludicrous as making tax cuts permanent as a budget-balancing tool.

9. That's EXACTLY it.. We got a rebate and we registered BEFORE

the "increase" happened.. Our registration was due and paid before the increase was put into effect, and last week we got a check for $25.00..(okay..we have an old crappy car :(..)..So for all the folks who drive the fancy-schmantzy cars, they got a windfall..more money back than what the "increase" was.. Just another "present" from our friendly leaders.. Aren't they "swell"..?

The GOP has been working on this Arnold project for some time, trying to de-regulate the rules against Arnold becomming VP, or President.

11. The republicans are trying to change this in congress

Their rationale is actually valid in some ways..

When the country was founded, the founding fathers wanted to make sure that the US did not descend back into a British ascendency type of government, so it made sense to limit the top job to a "native born" citizen.. But over the years, we have had so many immigrants who have contributed, and yet they are denied the top job..

And someone who was brought here as a baby, but was raised American is just as good a citizen as someone who accidentally was born here..

I doubt that it will pass, but they are trying ..

It will get worse. Bush is out to destroy California just like they did NY State. Bite the hand that feeds you. California adds a lot of wealth to this country...gone.

Did California citizens really feel he could stop their debt when it is national in origin? DA!!!

I guess, I'm being too hard on them. The CA election and removal was all criminal activity.

They might consider another recall in November.

Anyone who thinks that Ahhhnold is governor, has rocks in their head.. Pete Wilson is in charge. We had a coup last October, and wasn't it swell that they did it so soon after the real election, so that they would have a long time to mess with us? :(

Well, Arnold meet the Legislative Analyst. They review the budget every year and make recommendations. I don't think Arnie knew about the Office of Legislative Analyst.

15. Sleepless in Sacramento

As I write this, I am in a Holiday Inn in West Sacramento, having just finished two days of intensive workshops on fuel cells and the hydrogen economy, which I'll be reporting on at the EVWorld.Com web site.

As I walked back to my rental car parked on top of a J Street parking garage, I meet a woman who was towing a couple boxes on a little luggage carrier. Since I was only a couple blocks from the Capitol Building, I asked her what she thought of the Governor's performance to date. She commented that the people who work in State Government are a bit skeptical. She commented that all of the proposed solutions to the State's budget ills have been proposed before. She said one person told her that he or she could pull out identical proposals that were made 7 years ago.

Interestingly, the Governor showed at the California EPA building where the workshops were held just minutes after we left to go out to the California Fuel Cell Partnership to test drive some fuel cell cars including the Hyundai Santa Fe (much improved over the first time I drove it), the DaimlerChrysler F-Cell, a Ford Focus fuel cell car, and still the most sophisticated of all, the Toyota FCHV "Highlander." I drove both the F-Cell and the Highlander, plus the John Deere fuel cell "Gator." This is fabulous technology, but we have a very looooooooong way to go before you and I can afford it.
