NYT: CIA Admits It Didn't Give Weapon Data to the U.N.
INTELLIGENCE
C.I.A. Admits It Didn't Give Weapon Data to the U.N.
By DOUGLAS JEHL and DAVID E. SANGER

Published: February 21, 2004

WASHINGTON, Feb. 20 — The Central Intelligence Agency has acknowledged that it did not provide the United Nations with information about 21 of the 105 sites in Iraq singled out by American intelligence before the war as the most highly suspected of housing illicit weapons.

The acknowledgment, in a Jan. 20 letter to Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, contradicts public statements before the war by top Bush administration officials.

Both George J. Tenet, the director of central intelligence, and Condoleezza Rice, the national security adviser, said the United States had briefed United Nations inspectors on all of the sites identified as "high value and moderate value" in the weapons hunt.

The contradiction is significant because Congressional opponents of the war were arguing a year ago that the United Nations inspectors should be given more time to complete their search before the United States and its allies began the invasion. The White House, bolstered by Mr. Tenet, insisted that it was fully cooperating with the inspectors, and at daily briefings the White House issued assurances that the administration was providing the inspectors with the best information possible....

5. Even worse
In the typical pot calling kettle black fashion the excuse given I believe was mistrust of the UN and their incompetence in deciding the issue.

Everything is so antithetical that any news treatment that softpeddles or slides around the naked lies does not communicate the enormity of the crime or hypocrisy to the American people. They just get to sense it and then are given another unsubstantial catch phrase to define it.

6. More of the same old shell game
It's 4 guys up on stage doing a song and dance. One of them tap dances for a while, then tips his hat and gestures with his cane to another who picks up the tune. Ya got yer Shrubby, yer Tenet, yer Cheyney and yer Rummy. Every now and then, along comes Powell running across the stage doing his sad clown routine.

Meantime the ushers are picking the pockets of everybody in the cheap seats.

7. What a perfect parody
I wonder if the intent of the administration was to keep a few of those suspected sites from being inspected because they knew we were going to war anyway, and they were certain those sites would provide the proof of WMD's in Iraq. I'd love to see if a connection could be made between these sites listed and the intelligence Chalabi and his gang were providing.

8. I see they're still trying to smear Tenet...
I bet Tenet wasn't involved in those discussions...that Rice was the primary point of contact for the U. S. to the UN.

Seems like George and everyone else connected to this admin have a tendency to lie and stretch the truth in most everything the do. It's time to boot these liars out of office.

10. They never wanted the inspections to succeed
Their worst case scenario would have been for the inspectors to find WMDs and start to get rid of them under the UN aegis. Then there would have been no way in hell they could have forwarded their plans for invasion and occupation.

11. Australia's top intelligence person also says that George W. Bush
"exaggerated" the threat of WMD. Seems like every hour new lies are being exposed about the "reasons" we were told about the "decision" to take US to war with Iraq.

It's simple. George W. Bush and his administration lied and used OSP selective intelligence to bolster the lies IMO.

12. US in violation of 1441?
Post #3 by underpants:
UN Resolution 1441 #10

10. Was the US in violation of 1441?? This resolution is frequently used by the bush*/republicans to justify the Republican invasion of Iraq!

14. Ah, the bush weekend bad news dump continues!
Yesterday we had the Iraq caucuses scrubbed. Today, the revelation of yet another lie on Iraq. Funny how the letter to Carl Levin was received A MONTH ago, but the info has only made it to the public now...and on a Saturday at that. You almost get the feeling that the bushies don't want people to notice.

15. Soon we will be facing "lie fatigue".

Then the scant, one-shot press coverage of Bush lies that sporadically dribbles out will be relegated to the sunrise/sunset time table.

"Bush lied to incite war. The sun will rise at 6:41. Yawn."

17. isn't the point of this NOT that the CIA failed to give the data to the UN
but WHO decided that they shouldn't?

does anyone seriously think that Tenet acted, or didn't act, of his own volition here?

on a matter of such vital importance, it's pretty obvious that Tenet wouldn't have the authority to make such a monumental decision, right?
