eubusinessMedia watchdog wants Honduras out of EU-Latin America summit
02 April 2010, 23:14 CET
(MADRID) - A media watchdog on Friday called on Spain, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU, not to invite Honduran President Porfirio Lobo to an EU-Latin America summit because of the number of reporters murdered in the country.
Reporters Without Borders said five journalists were murdered last month in Honduras while another fled the country after gunmen tried to kill him, making it "the world's most dangerous country for journalists in the first quarter of 2010."
"No one has been brought to justice for any of the murders or any of the physical attacks or acts of intimidation or censorship of journalists and human rights activists since last June's coup," it added in a statement.
The media watchdog said it is a signatory of a petition addressed to Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero urging that Lobo not be allowed to attend the May 15-19 EU-Latin America summit in Madrid.
