Debate Highlights G.O.P.’s Lack of a Unified Security Vision
Source: NYT

The Republican presidential candidates placed in sharp relief on Tuesday night their party’s lack of a single national security vision a decade after the Sept. 11 attacks, differing over the pace of withdrawal from Afghanistan, aid to Pakistan and what to do with illegal immigrants already in the United States.

In a debate that went deep into foreign policy issues but did little to alter the basic contours of the battle for the Republican presidential nomination, the candidates by and large struck a hawkish tone in dealing with Iran and protecting the United States from terrorist attacks.

But under questioning from Wolf Blitzer of CNN and an array of conservative and neoconservative officials from past administrations now affiliated with the other sponsors — the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation — the candidates engaged in a number of spirited debates among themselves.

Newt Gingrich, newly resurgent in polls, said he would support an Israeli strike against Iran, if “only as a last recourse and only as a step toward replacing the regime.”

asking questions instead of serving hard prison time for crimes against the United States of America.

The Heritage foundation and AEI haven't been right about a foreign policy issue in forever.

They have no shame. How dare they ask questions about the cost of their own failed fucking polices.

WTF.

3. Interesting debate. Actually, most of the candidates did surprisingly well,
except for Herman Cain of course.

4. Yes, "interesting," just like Stanley Kubricks 'Dr. Strangelove.'
Which did "surprisingly well" at the box office. You should gotten it by now.

13. Really....What did you agree with them on?
 I can not think of a single time in our nation's history when Republicans have been correct about foreign policy issues..

9. Obama seems to be quite the war Prez as well.
It will be interesting to see how long he holds out before engaging Syria.

Goes with the lack of anyone qualified to run anything.

As I used to say about the Bush Jr. team members....

Would you let any of these people:

Watch your kids while you were on vacation?
Watch your pets?
Water you plants?

Any of them?

7. And they're touting Gingrich as the "smart" one.
Iran has something like 77 million people. Israel is going to cause regime change in Iran? Hell,
even the United States couldn't cause regime change in Iran. Only Iranians will cause regime
change in Iran, just like last time, in 1979.

Fortunately, I doubt that Gingrich will have anything to do with any regime changes anywhere,
including in the United States in 2012.
