Cops break up church sit-in - Spain

Madrid, Spain - Riot police broke up a sit-in on Sunday by hundreds of illegal immigrants occupying two churches in Barcelona to demand the right to live and work in Spain legally.

Police cleared the 1 500 immigrants from the city's cathedral at 04:00 and about 200 demonstrators from another nearby church, hours after the protests began. A Barcelona police spokesperson said the demonstrators left peacefully.

The demonstrators were among the thousands of migrant labourers - from Pakistan, Morocco, South America and other parts of the world - who work illegally in Spain.
