The downtown detention center is considerably more restrictive than the minimum security prison camp her attorneys had sought. Lawyers and others familiar with the system say that prisoners of notoriety and celebrity like Lea Fastow are more likely to be targets of other inmates in a higher security prison.
Lea Fastow pleaded guilty to the tax charge May 6 and was sentenced to the maximum by U.S. District Judge David Hittner, who had refused to recommend a specific facility to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which makes the ultimate prison assignments.
Lea Fastow was a prime candidate for a minimum security prison camp, but the judge's refusal to include her pre-sentencing report in her record could be what caused her to be assigned to the downtown facility.
