There's this feeling of overconfidence about November that bothers me.
Some people think that Bush losing in November is a sure thing.

That bothers me a little, because the possiblity of complacency setting in.

This White House is capable of anything, I think.

Am I a jerk for being concerned about this?

Terry

1. nope, it bothers me too
a lot can happen between now and November and Bush Inc is the lowest of the low; there is nothing they won't do. If anything, I know they will resort to vote fraud. All of you people who are so sure we will win in November, please remember - WE WON THE LAST ELECTION.

2. It's the press that worries me -- especially tv news....
If they are able to shape the campaign, as they did in 2000, and define our candidate, we will lose.

4. I agree.
It was Republicans who were behind the Arkansas Project. They probably have right-wing operatives working that scandal-machine now. They only seem to be worried about winning ... as David Brock described in his book, they abandon the principles they speak about in public in private.

I hope no one is taking it for granted that the Democrats will win. They have long sleeves to pull shit out of.

5. The consensus on this board has been wrong most of the time
There was alot of thought that Arnold would lose. WRONG

Alot of trumpeting about Dean getting the nomination.... WRONG

Alot of ballyhoo about Rush going down in flames .... WRONG

No one has a crystal ball, and the Repukes have 200 million dollars. Skepticism is in order.

I don't want to get too excited over a November victory, either. However, the feeling of dread I had a year ago that a Bush victory was a sure thing has changed. Now I believe Bush will have a real fight on his hands, and he will not have the Supreme Court on his side. This will be one of the few times in his life that Bush has had to earn something based on his own merits. And unless the economy turns around, two million jobs are created, Osama Bin Laden is found, and Americans stop dying in Iraq, by November, Bush will have to actually campaign. Right now, what does he have? Tax cuts for the wealthy. That's it. There are not any other big domestic programs the Bush administration has created. People can argue that we're safer than 9/11, but that's due to a fallacy in logic, namely, Bush has done a good job since there have not been any other attacks in the United States by terrorists. Well, that could be due to Bush's policies, but I suspect is has more to do with the terrorists wanting to harm us by proxy, attacking our allies in the Middle East and other locations.

Bush will trot out the capture of Saddam Hussein. I hope when he does, Americans remember that we went to war in Iraq not to capture Saddam Hussein, but to disarm Iraq and uncover huge stockpiles of weapons. I think the WMD issue is going to come back and bite Bush in the ass. Especially if Americans continue to die in Iraq.

So, I'm crossing my fingers. A Bush victory in November is no longer a sure thing.

16. Well said, scott
I haven't sensed overconfidence on this board. But I have missed stuff before.

Nobody I know takes ANYTHING for granted in Imperial Amerika, where Orwellianism is increasingly becoming the order of the day...every day.

8. No overconfidence here
Bush has shown time after time that he'll do ANYTHING to win -- lie, cheat or steal. I expect nothing but the worst out of them.

It will take the full effort of every Democrat to win, but I believe that is, indeed, possible.

9. I remember very cleary....
That people said the other George Bush couldn't possibly get elected in 1988 given the failures of the Reagan administration. Yet, Dukakis managed to punt the opportunity and Bush won. That cured me of any tendency toward complacency.

assassinations (JFK & RFK - who I am sure would have won in 1968)

Anything can happen and probably will. So I have major fears.

I still believe Wellstone was BFEE wetwork.

Frankly it is my opinion that the BFEE was PROBABLY deep in the JFK assassination as well as the Reagan attempt and ALSO the RFK killing.

There is plenty of smoke on them.

May God(dess) protect Edwards. I do not think Kerry has anything to fear from his skull brothers except dirty tricks.

But I do fear for our Democrats who are independent of the DLC/PNAC crowd.

11. The primaries are in the news and since the Democrats are the...
only political party where there is some competition going on, we as Democrats are on the top of the news heap. When a Democratic winner is declared the fireworks will start, and it will be bilateral. Anyone who thinks Bush* is going to be easy to beat just does not get it. The race will be tight and ugly!

so it HAS to be ugly.

And we need to make sure the ugliness of Bush and his corporate war profiteers gets exposed for all to see.

14. No. Even if the Dem is winning in polls by 15% in November,
GET OUT THE VOTE. The last thing we want to do is lose because we thought we'd win.

15. Good news and bad news
The good news: way more Americans reject His Chimperial Majesty now, and will vote against him, than in 2000, when the sorry little creep lost the popular vote. We were all worried thinking that lots more people were crazier than really are. No -- the common sense and decency of Americans has been revealed yet again.

I think there were lots of people who felt he should "have a chance" -- well, they've given him chance after chance, and he comes up zip each time -- meanwhile their lives are getting harder all the time, and they hear Bush telling them that "NO REALLY! Things are great now!!" -- and are beginning to figure out he's been lying about everything.

The bad news: the Bushistas will not relinquish power easily, if at all. I think we have candidates who will win -- but I am wondering if our party and we have a plan to act on when they try to steal the election again.

I sure hope John Kerry knows how to stand on a tank -- because it might come to that.

Are you ready? Do we have a plan this time?

Wes Clark vowed to fight any election tampering, although I have not heard the others speak much of this....
