Anyone else sick of Nascar Dads being called "patriotic"?
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 01:25 AM by rumguy
When the mediawhores talk about the "Nascar Dads" they always say they are social conservatives and patriotic.

What is patriotic about shopping at Walmart, where many of the goods are made by poorly paid third-world workers?

Whatever happened to "buy American"?

What is patriotic about waving little plastic flags made in China?

I'm sick of Nascar Dads being shoved down our throats as some kind of uber-patriotic voting block of "real americas" - it's a bunch of media created garbage.

I don't see Nascar dads as being patriotic. Some are, I'm sure, but most buy their Tobey Keith CDs at Walmart and don't even think twice about it...

1. Of Course Patriotism == Blind Obedience and Lack of analytical thinking
What do you expect from people who worry about whether or not the Teletubbies are gay?!

"Nascar Dad" is a PC way of saying red-neck inbred knuckledragger who would rather kill "Sand Niggers" than actually conserve energy or would rather stay up some woman's crotch than fix our many social ills.

Basically, "Nascar Dads" have about to do with auto-racing as "Soccer Mom" has to do with soccer. My dad loves Nascar....and he's a bitter middle aged black guy who is hardcore anti-free trade and totally supportive of gay rights. Not exactly the type the media was thinking of when they thought up such an asinine term.

3. I'm not sure whats funnier...the points you make or the fact that...
They cheer on "Stock Cars" that have NOTHING stock about them. When was the last time you could buy a rear wheel drive, 4 speed manual, 4 barrel carbureted, 650 horsepower V8 Chevrolet Lumina at your local Chevy dealership?

NASCAR is the professional wrestling of motorsports. In Europe, it is laughed at as being the hokey, parochial charade that it is. They actually do race REAL stock cars over there, slightly modified for safety and they call it "Saloon Car" racing in England and "Tin Tops" in the motoring press. Not to mention they turn left AND right at almost every race.

The fans of NASCAR stereotypically are lower middle class, beer drinking southern white guys. I know, I know there are plenty of educated folks that think that sort of racing is just too cool. But, sorry DU NASCAR fans. A (Ex)Winston Cup car is not a race car. It is a souped up, stripped down family car/taxi cab. Real race cars don't have roofs, fenders, doors, headlights, trunks, gun racks or mechanics named "Bubba" or "Chocolate"

11. Remember when George H.W. Bush confessed his love for pork rinds?
Same deal. And George looked so ridiculous in those cowboy boots and flannel shirts. I much preferred his effete preppy persona.

4. I'm sick of meaningless media-created demographics
like "NASCAR dads" and "soccer moms" and "angry white males," and I'm particularly sick of those who should know better playing their little game.

One expects stereotyping from the Freepers, but not from those who should be--or at least claim to be--more enlightened.

5. I think Nascar dads are a media created demographic too
But the question is: what do they mean when they use the phrase? They mean southern white men who spend most of their money at Walmarts...

8. Its easier to stereotype than to talk truth which is much more complex.
NASCAR 'dads' booed bush at the indy. Sort of blows
the stereotype, doesn't it. Also, for a lot of media
elites, everything west of new york is cleveland.
<To borrow a funny phrase> To speak in the shorthand
of stereotypes is to reveal a weak and lazy mind.

12. What do NASCAR dads do?
That has a fatherly component, I mean. Take their kids to the races? Watch races on TV with their kids? I know a guy who enjoys watching NASCAR on TV, which is one of the many ways he avoids spending time with his kids. Does that make him a NASCAR dad? My cousin is a single mom who happens to like NASCAR. Does that make her a NASCAR mom? She went on a NASCAR-themed cruise and left the kids home. If I started liking NASCAR - which I'm sure I wouldn't - but if I did, could I be a NASCAR mom? I'm not patriotic by the current most widely accepted definition. If the NASCAR dads are that kind of patriotic, they'd revoke my pass.

13. Yes, and I'm sick and tired of the south being called the "heartland"
For the most part, the south is a backwards, uneducated region filled with fundamentalist nutjobs whose treasonous Confederate ancestors fought to defend slavery; even the Democrats down there are conservative. These are idiots who are still fighting about evolution! Yet the backwards, primitive south is constantly referred to as the "heartland" and "real America" while places like New England (where most of the prominent founding fathers lived and where many crucial Revolutionary war battles were fought) and New York are attacked as being somehow unpatriotic because they tend to vote liberal and Democratic.

And it's not like Kerry is going to win any southern states (with the possible exception of Florida), so I don't want to hear anyone whining about how I'm "insulting" the south. Sometimes the truth hurts.

22. Me too
As I read these hateful posts, freeperville pops into my mind.

If a new member reads some of these posts, they may have to check to see if they're on the right board.

I've alerted the mods and they locked one thread, but they seem to ignore the bashing that's going on all over the place since * made an appearance last week.

Those of you that choose to lump all Nascar fans into one category should be ashamed of yourselves.

Yeah, this is the way to bring people over to our side. NOT!

16. When they call them "patriotic" what the mean is:
supporting an illegal war based on lies and being a conservative is "patriotic" implying those who would not fit that category are not "patriotic."

That's why it bothers me. The media influences public perception of the term "patriotic." I barely means loving your country anymore - it mostly means being a conservative, at least in how the media uses the term.

17. I have nothing against NASCAR Dads
That is as bullshit a media monniker as "Generation X" "Soccer Moms" or any of their other cute little nicknames.

In any case, even these arbitrary groupings are filled with a hugely dievrse group of people I have no doubt.

Think about it.

26. If they were TRULY patriotic, how can they attend a race?
Most of them are young enough to serve. Why are they watching races instead of eating sand and sweatin' the drive to work?

Yeah, Media invention.
"Nascar Dads" have been around for years. The Media treats the "phenom" like they're some mother-load of brand new voters. Most of them have been voting against Clinton's Pee-Pee for years, and are likely to continue.

28. Locking
Rules to start discussion threads in the General Discussion forum

1. If you start a thread in the General Discussion forum, you must present your opinion in a manner that is not inflammatory, which respects differences in opinion, and which is likely to lead to respectful discussion rather than flaming. Some examples of things which should generally be avoided are: unnecessarily hot rhetoric, nicknames for prominent Democrats or their supporters, broad-brush statements about groups of people, single-sentence "drive-by" thread topics, etc.

The NASCAR threads have become flamefests. Please note this in the simple form of the DU rules:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html
Treat people with respect. Don't be rude or bigoted.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,
DU moderator
