Taking fish from the Lavaca Bay has been banned for the past 16 years, and continues to be prohibited because of mercury contamination.
In 1998, the Texas Department of Health placed a ban on taking fish and crabs from the water in Lavaca Bay, near the Alcoa Plant. Kirk Wiles, the Seafood Safety Division Director with the Texas Department of Health says, “Mercury is widespread in the environment. The majority of health concerns relate to the organic kind or methyl mercury. The way people get that in their body is through consumption of contaminated fish.”
The mercury contamination in the bay came from Alcoa’s processing plant. Although they no longer use it, the effects are still being seen in the fish.

The Texas Department of Health has left the clean up effort to officials at the Alcoa Plant. We have tried to contact officials at the plant for almost a week to get the status of the cleanup, and have not received a response.
