Why isn't Lott called a "Mississippi Conservative"? Or better yet...
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 01:03 PM by JanMichael
...a "Confederate Conservative"!

Matter of fact why does the media label Pelosi a "San Francisco Liberal" and not do the same for the other side? Ashcroft a "Fanatical Christian Conservative (Profoundly Fascist Conservative)"? DeLay could be called a "Texas Conservative", or perhaps a "Freaking Lying Sack of Horse Dung Conservative", but no. They leave the nicknames for us.

We see this happening every single day, by the supposed "Liberal" media too, and yet I rarely hear someone challenge the use of such obviously biased labels.

This is maddening to me.

Liberal Media? Bollocks.

EDIT: I should add "Cheap Labor Conservative" which is an accurate label for most all Republicans (And some DU'ers too). We need more than one that'll stick though.

3. Seems fair enough to me.
Calling one side certain names and ignoring cutesy names for the other side is seriously screwed up.

Funny thing is about thse labels is that the most common one isn't even very accurate. Massachusetts has had 4 Repuke governors in a row IIRC...

"Confederate Conservatives" is, I believe, much more accurate for many of the neo-CON creeps.

4. "Cheap-labor Conservative"......it covers everything from
slavery to walmart....it's the entire essense of everything these reTHUGlicans do....destroying unions, no healthcare, no job benefits, no retirement funds, no safety regulations, no environmental regulations for industrial pollutants...

all just to provide CHEAP LABOR....and the ULTIMATE cheap labor was SLAVERY...where labor was free, you didn't have to pay any wages at all....and that's what these reTHUGlicans are really striving for...

5. I'd forgotten "CLC", thanks! But we need more.
They use San Fran, Massachsetts, Berkley and I'm sure several others.

So far I think "Cheap Labor Conservatives" and "Confederate Conservatives" are the best.

7. Confederate Conservative sums it up nicely
Or, Criminal Conservatives for the White House gang...

I got upset when my local paper referred to one of the Democratic candidates for president as "silver tongued" - which, to me, implies dishonesty.

10. Of course not but that's not how the code word game is played.
Also I'd assume that Lott would be happy to be called a "Confederate Conservative", hell he's all but done it himself.

16. terms of endearment?
There are undoubtedly plenty of people who would cotton (no pun left behind) to someone described as a Confederate Conservative, but the point is what effect these terms will have on the politically uncommitted.

By trying to come up with an opposite, we just make a mirror image, which means THEY'VE framed the issues again.
Let's do it on OUR terms instead
Better to leave race out of it altogether and focus on the things that can get working people and struggling middle class people to vote in their own interest, instead of being co-opted by culture.
The word conservative speaks of caution and prudence to non-politically aware people who want good stewardship in Washington. We have to unplug the radical anti-government, anti-people agenda of the neo-CONS from the concept of prudence and caution. So we need to be asking:
"what are they CONSERVING?"
"Who are they conserving it for?"
and saying:
"conservative Con-artists"
"Outsourcing conservatives"
"Big Business conservatives"
"Bad schools conservatives"
"Enron conservatives"
"Halliburton conservatives"
"Me first conservatives"
"selfish conservatives"
"Anti family conservatives"
"sweatshop conservatives"
"worker-hating conservatives"
"bank account patriots"
"bin Laden Business Partners"
"retirement-trashing conservatives"
"management conservatives"
"smokestack smooching conservatives"
"oil guzzling conservatives"
"America Hating, Bermuda-headquartering, Caymen Islands-bank-account-having, Saudi-snuggling conservatives"

Of course you have to pick which of these applies to the situation.
The right wing has a whole book of these kind of epithets against liberals and progressives, time for a taste of their own medicine.

18. Welcome to DU, OhioDem!
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 03:50 PM by Ohio Dem
I was reading down the reply directory for this thread, and I thought I posted something without realizing I was doing it! I thought aliens took over my body or something. Oh no! Not again I was thinking. And then I realized there wasn't a space in between Ohio and Dem. Wheww!

Attention DU: Ohio Dem and OhioDem are two different people. So if I say something stupid, don't blame OhioDem.

On edit, you make good points there, OD.

11. Yep.
I really like the idea of calling these idiots Confederate Conservatives or something like that. "Bush is a Confederate Conservative, from the party of David Duke."

12. Right wing definitions
San Fransisco liberal: one who is 100% against "healthy" families and values. Wants to see bisexual orgies as the norm.

Massachusetts liberal: rich elite and completely out of touch. Loves minorities but the only ones he/she knows are paid help

Berkeley liberal: prone to violence, extremely militant

15. I perfer Neo-Fudalist...
mostly because I think it will anoy them more. Just a though, but why not an official DU dictionary of terms (so that we can change the english language to our benifit).

For instance:

Neo-Confederate: a conservative who wants to go back to the days of fudal estates and a downtroden pessentry.

Conservative: "...a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, never learned to walk forward." - FDR

Liberal: "...a Liberal is a man who uses his legs and his hands at the behest - at the command - of his head." - FDR

17. Dixiecrat is accurate as well
Many Southern Republicans are really turncoat Southern Democrats of the stripe known as Dixiecrats - this is the real reason for the Republican lock on the South - though you are hardpressed to get any of them to admit that. Go right down the line of Southern Republicans in or out of government and many of them turn out to be Dixiecrats, including those pompous blowhard TV preachers in Virginia, Jerry "tellatubby" Falwell and Pat "Watch out for those meteors" Robertson.
