So what's next?

After the big culture war over gay marriage is won by liberals and begins to subside what will be the next big wedge issue conservatives use that will become the next civil rights fight? The death penalty? polygmy? assisted suicide? marajuana laws? Just curious what peopel are thinking...it goes without saying that they will always have a wedge issue...they dont get much out of abortion anymore because most people percieve it as politically untouchable, they just spit and scream about it a lot. I assume within the next 10 yrs gay marriage will be a national reality. They failed to capitalize much on Affirmative Action and soon the majority in this country will be minorities so it isn't something they will want to touch.

it's occurrence has potential with this crowd in power

and, even with someone else in office, the framework, infrastructure, mechanisms, etc., which have spawned ... wouldn't that be too much power for anyone in that office?

and, even with someone else in office ... these culture warmongers aren't going away ...

we need some resounding things to happen to show this Nation as what it really is all about

3. I think that the Gay Marriage issue will be around.....

for a while.

I don't see liberals winning this one outright.

Homosexuality is extremely distasteful to too many people for this to just be 'won' by the left.

For a group of people who say that they want fewer laws and more freedom, the right wingers seem to be having wet dreams over the thoughts of taking away people's rights. I think the republicans will try to milk it for all it's worth, pandering to their extremist base.

I think if they can't make the gay marriage thing work to their advantage in a few years, they will simply pick another group. I see them probably trying keep using the term "liberal" as a wedge issue.

If they are going to pick a minority group, I think that they are out of luck. Too many "minority" groups are simply too big and powerful to pick on anymore. Since the right wingers seem to only pick on small groups that can't make a huge difference in an election, that limits their options somewhat.

I am willing to bet if the GLBT had 10 or 20 million members, the repubs would be crawling all over themselves trying to allow gay marriages.

I think that is the most fundemental difference in the left wingers and the right wingers- us lefties prefer to push for something because it needs to be done, not because we think it will help us in an election year.

5. I think it comes down to numbers as well.........

in that, there are simply too few gay people in America to really make a difference politically....real change will only happen when they are enough straight people on their side of the issue.

I just feel that when it comes to homosexuals getting married, there are not enough straight people willing to go that far.

6. That reminds me of a quote one of my right wing friends used to say

"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend unto the death your right to say it"

Shouldn't that apply to anything someone does that does not adversly and truly effect another person against their will?

something like: I may not agree with what you say or do, but I will defend unto the death your right to say or do it.

7. No question, it most certainly should......

but homosexualiy, to many, is simply wrong; when push comes to shove there won't be enough support to make Marriage between same-sex couples a reality.

8. You have to remember that gay people have

mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, sons, daughter, grandchildren, friends, coworkers, neighbors, acquantinses. It isn't only gay people who have a stake in gay marriage.
