How Much Money Do You Think Reagan's Funeral Cost Taxpayers?
INCLUDING the salaries of the folks who had to work overtime... and the paid "vacation" day for Federal workers. (Was that just in DC or for ALL Federal workers?)

Has anyone seen an estimate? Or heard anyone speculate on the cost?

1. I heard 20M. But I don't know how reliable that is. ANY MONEY
IS TOO MUCH according to me. But I guess having been a president, you cannot just put him in a hole. And apparently HE WANTED TO GO OUT IN STYLE. Each president makes the plans for his burial while in office.

12. Yes
but Kennedy got four days of mourning. Reagan got seven. Not really the same situations, are they?

13. Both JFK and LBJ were buried within 3 days of death.
Not four.

16. You're welcome, ma'am. Princess Di took 7 days.

MLK was murdered on the 4th of April and buried on the 9th - 5 days.
JFK was November 22-25 and LBJ was January 22-25.

Six days of dragging Ronald abu Bonzo's rotting 93-year-old corpse all over the country is more than any sane person should have to tolerate. (As a side note, it violates the guidelines of most major religions.)

I'd be interested to know how many (old growth redwood?) trees were sacrificed for that 700 lb. casket. I recall the Paul Wellstone's casket was a fairly plain pine box. I think MLK's was, too.

The excessive consumption appetites of these elitists is truly appalling.

20. At 700 Lbs... I Feared That Lincoln's Catafalque Would Collapse
under the excessive weight. Obviously it wasn't designed with an extravagant 700 lb modern airtight casket in mind.

Do you think that additional (metal?) support structures were added to the original 140 year old catafalque? Perhaps some hidden scaffolding inside that bears the weight and the original wooden structure now serves as a facade?

23. Kennedy was killed on the 22nd and buried on the 25th.
that's three days. He was a sitting YOUNG president who was assasinated while in office. Raygun had essentially been dead for TEN YEARS.

15. Was he the same one calling for less goverment?
It's amazing how everything is unnecessary until it comes to what they want. Like Grover Norquist trying to get Reagan on all the money. He's the same one advocating no taxes. Who exactly does he think is going to pay for all of that?

19. Even Nancy's interest in stem cell research is based on personal angst.
There is no such thing as a "compassionate" (neo)conservative -- these people don't give a flying fuck until it hurts (or benefits) them personally. If there's one personal character quality I think should disqualify someone for holding any elected office it's lack of empathy.

These people see others as a means, not an end in themselves. That's an ethical pathology - sociopathology.

8. Yes, particularly since funding for fire fighting tankards
has been cut just before fire season. Let's hope the Pacific Palisades (Schwarzeneggers) and Bel Air (Reagans) are the next threatened fire areas. I think you will see a big change in budget priorities.

5. Think about how selfish and irresponsible it is
to want a state funeral, knowing it will cost even more than it would cost right now (while you're planning it), knowing how much of the people's money has already been spent on you personally, knowing your family can easily pay for your funeral. Ugh.

7. Conservatives are upset about it.
I listened to Mike Savage's radio program and he was ranting about the many funerals of RR and how it was such a waste of tax dollars. He was blaming Bush and his elite for the pomp and pageantry and he said that RR would not have approved at all. Callers were calling in and agreeing with him, one even made the point that the reason we revolted against Britain was our hate of the monarchy. They were comparing the week of "ceremonies" to the pageantry of a monarchy.

It was a hoot, GW43 has angered conservatives!!!!!!!!

make Savage rant against the troglodyte repug president!

But I have heard that Reagan had specified what his funeral should be like. Apparently, all the presidents need to do this while in office.

The holiday day-off was not his idea, I don't think.

10. Weeelllllllllll, let's be honest
RR was making many decisions on his own when he was in office (I believe he had Alzheimer's long before they announced it.) Nancy planned the whole show over the last 10 years, she wanted to show the weed family that her man was better than any of them.

Mike Savage was incensed, especially about the Hollywood crowd at the private evening ceremony (and Air Force 3's third flight with the casket). He kept saying, look Mickey Rooney, look Wayne Newton. He was PO'd. It was great!!!

Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 08:32 AM by leftchick
Sadly you can not lay the blame on shrubya* for this one. When RR passed away Nancy handed over a 300 page schedule of events to the misadministration. Our tax dollars... :puke:

25. The "pure" conservatives
are blaming Bush and his elite. And, just because bush camp pushes that these were RR wishes, conservatives know that they had to be given the go ahead by the admin. They know RR had lots of money and that RR family could pick up part of the tab.
They are dense and bigotted, but not totally ignorant. We sell them short when we think they are too stupid to get that the admin had a hand in this.

It's done every time a President dies, regardless of which Party holds the office at the time. Bush can't be blamed for this one...it's been going on for decades.

26. an acquaintance of mine said...
....but Ronald Reagan want an "everyman's" funeral where the common people could watch, and his grieving widow spent her last ten terrible years planning an event that would rival Churchill's in pomp and ceremony. What was the harm in accomodating her, he asked, and said that questions regarding Reagan's policies could be asked but pressing those questions last week was not the time.

I gave him a huge earful:

Why? Why? To preserve illusions and fables?

A woman married to a man who caused so much pain to millions, circumvented the Constitution of the United States, and benefited from deceit and chicanery should be shielded from the sentiments of the citizens of a democracy so that she might dream on?

Why? Why?

Those who died of AIDs weren't spared. Those rendered homeless weren't spared. Those thrown into poverty weren't spared.

I vehemently reject this special elitism. It is the stuff of lesser societies. Citizens of a democratic society require the truth, and all of it.
