There are a million threads about this already. Here's another.
I am very glad the GLBT community in NOLA had the Southern Decadence parade today.
It was as if they stood up to the great goddess Katrina and said:
Katrina, screw you.
You took our city.
You took our homes.
You took many of our lives.
You turned our land into a rotting cesspool we'll spend billions of dollars reclaiming.
But you'll never take our pride.
Our spirit.
Our guts.
You'll never take away what it is to be a member of our community in our city.
You think you got us down? You think you can kill our spirit?
No.
You'll never do that.
Katrina, you tried to kill our celebration. Our Southern Decadence. That's not going to happen.
Yes, many will complain about us being "insensitive" by holding a celebration with devastation all around. Most of the people complaining hate us anyway.
Our beloved city is in ruins. It will never be the same as it was.
But we're alive, and for now, that's enough.
Katrina, you tried to utterly demolish us. To strip us of our pride as well as our possessions and our families. You failed.
Tomorrow we recover from your devastation.
Today we celebrate our survival.
