Dear Mr. "President," I'm writing to express my concerns over your proclamation of Marriage Protection Week. I'm a bit mystified, however, since you fail to say what the enemy of marriage is?
I assume, of course, you will be shortly issuing an Executive Order banning divorces and re-marriages during Marriage Protection Week...after all, this practice, in my opinion, is far more damaging to the instituion of marriage than allowing two people of the same gender who truly love one another to get married.
So don't call it "marriage" if you don't want to...call it a Civil Union. No church is forced to recognize any Civil Union as a marriage if it doesn't want to. The practice would merely confer onto ALL Americans rights granted ONLY to heterosexuals.
OK, OK...I know...a homosexual couple can go to a lawyer, have papers drawn up, and get most of those rights...estate, medical surrogate, hospital visitation, right of survivorship for ownership of property...the average lawyer might charge the couple oh, say, maybe $2,000 for the necessary paperwork...rights that are conferred unto heterosexual couples for a $35 marriage license. Explain to me how this is equal treatment under the LAW?
The LAW...which you have sworn to uphold and defend? I know...I know, demagoguery works better for yu than upholding the law, but just for once, I'd like to see you fulfill your sacred obligation to your office, which you took on January 21, 2001.
So, to put all this in perspective, may I ask you to consider the following?
Being as we know divorce destoys families (especially the children,) which is more damaging to the sanctity of the institution of marriage...and which is more damaging to the sacred institution of family? A - Allowing one man to divorce and remarry five different times...or B - Allowing a homosexual couple who truly loves one another to marry ONCE?
In closing, I will again suggest that, since you are so concerned about protecting marriage from enemies unnamed, that you will be shortly issuing an Executive Order banning divorces and remarriages during this Marriage Protection Week. I'll be looking for that most decisive action from you. After all, decisive action is what your Administration is so good at, right?
Sincerely NOT yours, Texas Democrat
