26. Dan Bern and the International Jewish Banking Conspiracy
The guy is a riot (and Jewish). His early stuff sounds a bit like Dylan with a 90's sense of humor, his more recent stuff is pretty straightforward rock with folk influence and is always fun.

He's also pretty damned liberal :). I discovered his stuff via Ani Difranco (who did production on his third album).

Most of the bands I like are not only obscure to the general public, but IMO don't even get enough respect among underground music fans. Here's just a few of 'em, mostly indie, old punk rock, and some electronica:

Moving Targets
Celibate Rifles
Teengenerate
Poison Idea
Union Carbide Productions
Swervedriver
Lungfish
Pole
Meat Beat Manifesto
Techno Animal

A few people have mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel, New Pornographers and Godspeed You Black Emperor, and I would debate whether or not they belong on this thread. They're certainly not well-known among the general public to the same extent that Britney Spears or even the Strokes are, sure. But they are quite well known among a solid cult following that includes a substantial number of college radio DJ's and music critics.

So of course, he's ignored.

Get to know him.
He's one of our greatest treasures.

Jerusalem
(Steve Earle)

I woke up this mornin' and none of the news was good
And death machines were rumblin' 'cross the ground where Jesus stood
And the man on my TV told me that it had always been that way
And there was nothin' anyone could do or say

And I almost listened to him
Yeah, I almost lost my mind
Then I regained my senses again
And looked into my heart to find

That I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Well maybe I'm only dreamin' and maybe I'm just a fool
But I don't remember learnin' how to hate in Sunday school
But somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again
But I still find some comfort now and then

Then the storm comes rumblin' in
And I can't lay me down
And the drums are drummin' again
And I can't stand the sound

But I believe there'll come a day when the lion and the lamb
Will lie down in peace together in Jerusalem

And there'll be no barricades then
There'll be no wire or walls
And we can wash all this blood from our hands
And all this hatred from our souls

And I believe that on that day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Who else has written anything this important and relevant recently?

Who do you think he's talking about here?

Ashes To Ashes
(Steve Earle)
chorus
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

A long time ago before the ice and the snow
There were giants that walked this land
And with each step they took, the mighty mountains shook
And the trees took a knee and the seas rolled in
Then one day they say the sky gave way
And death rained down, it made a terrible sound
There was fire everywhere and nothin' was spared
That walked on the land or flew through the air
And when it all was over
The slate wiped clean with a touch
There God stood and he saw it was good
And He said "ashes to ashes and dust to dust"

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Then the sea gave birth and it crawled up on the dirt
And stood up and took a look around
Said "I'm the next big thing and the gift that I bring
Comes directly from God, so there ain't no holdin' me down"
So he crowned himself king
Now no one remembers his name
But the seed that he sowed took the show on the road
There was blood on their hands and a plague on the land
They drew a line in the sand and made their last stand
They said "God made us in his image
And it's in God that we trust"
When asked about the men that had died by their hands
They said "ashes to ashes and dust to dust"

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Now, nobody lives forever
Nothin' stands the test of time
Oh, you heard 'em say "never say never"
But it's always best to keep it in mind
That every tower ever built tumbles
No matter how strong, no matter how tall
Someday even great walls will crumble
And every idol ever raised falls
And someday even man's best laid plans
Will lie twisted and covered in rust
When we've done all that we can but it slipped through our hands
And it's ashes to ashes and dust to dust

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

And finally, my favorite... Amerika: Version 6.0

Amerika v. 6.0 (The Best We Can Do)
(Steve Earle)

Look at ya
Yeah, take a look in the mirror now tell me what you see
Another satisfied customer in the front of the line for the American dream
I remember when we was both out on the boulevard
Talkin' revolution and singin' the blues
Nowadays it's letters to the editor and cheatin' on our taxes
Is the best that we can do

Come on

Look around
There's doctors down on Wall Street
Sharpenin' their scalpels and tryin' to cut a deal
Meanwhile, back at the hospital
We got accountants playin' God and countin' out the pills
Yeah, I know, that sucks – that your HMO
Ain't doin' what you thought it would do
But everybody's gotta die sometime and we can't save everybody
It's the best that we can do

Four score and a hundred and fifty years ago
Our forefathers made us equal as long as we can pay
Yeah, well maybe that wasn't exactly what they was thinkin'
Version six-point-oh of the American way
But hey we can just build a great wall around the country club
To keep the riff-raff out until the slump is through
Yeah, I realize that ain't exactly democratic, but it's either them or us and it's the best we can do

Yeah, passionely conservative
It's the best we can do

Conservatively passionate
It's the best we can do

Meanwhile, still thinkin'
Hey, let's wage a war on drugs
It's the best we can do
Well, I don't know about you, but I kinda dig this global warming thing...

Conspiracy Theory
(Steve Earle)

What if I told you it was done with mirrors
What if I showed you it was all a lie
Better be careful, someone might hear ya
The walls have ears and the sky has eyes
What if I said you were only dreamin'
What you wanna bet that all you gotta do
Is open up your eyes and you will wake up screamin'
When you realize that it's all come true

chorus
Hush, now don't you believe it
Cover your head and close your eyes
Now, take it or leave it
Go back to bed
Now don't you cry

Half a million soldiers fly across the water
One in ten are never comin' back again
Fifty thousand sons who never grew to fathers
Don't you ever wonder who they might have been
What if you could've been there on that day in Dallas
What if you could wrestle back the hands of time
Maybe somethin' could've been done in Memphis
We wouldn't be livin' in a dream that's died

chorus

Go on and tell yourself again there are no secrets
Go on and tell yourself that you don't want to know
It's best that you believe that you don't hear the footsteps
That follow you around no matter where you go
Maybe you were thinkin' that it didn't matter
Maybe you believed nobody else would care
But once you've added every little lie together
You finally find the truth was always waiting there

chorus x 2

chorus (fades)

This guy speaks to our hearts and our minds...

"It's important to remember that no matter what anyone tells you, it is never un-patriotic or un-american to question anything in a democracy"

Steve Earle 2002

Look, I'm a newbie and I find myself being drawn in deeper to this community of like minded people.

I don't know if it's considered good protocol to paste the lyrics of four songs on a thread about the best unknown band...
But if even a few people go out and find out more about Steve Earle and his music then I'll take the heat.

58. Great cd,"Jerusalem "is.I've got about everything he's ever done.
Nothing wrong with posting the lyrics to four great songs. That's the order I play them in when I'm driving, tracks 11 through 3.

Here are the lyrics to one of his earlier songs.I think he was about twenty when he wrote it.It's called "Devil's Right Hand".

About the time that daddy went to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store,I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

Asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up,I didn't understand
Mama said a pistol was the Devil's right hand
The Devil's right hand,the Devil's right hand
Mama said a pistol was the Devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightning but she loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow, soon found out
Get you into trouble but it can't get you out

Then I went and bought myself a Colt .45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Mama said a pistol was the Devil's right
The Devil's right hand,the Devil's right hand
Mama said a pistol was the Devil's right hand

Well I got into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating,I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched a man fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw

My trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded,"Not guilty",I said
"Not guilty", I said,"You've got the wrong man".
"Nothing touched the trigger but the Devil's right hand".
The Devil's right hand,the Devil's right hand
Mama said a pistol was the Devil's right hand

The song's only about 2:20 in length. The guy says so much in such
a short time and with so few words. Most songwriters could use fifteen minutes and not make as powerful a statement. There are a number of Steve Earle fans on board here.I'm sure that comes as no surprise to you.

I'll be seeing him in Seattle June 30th.He'll be playing with his bluegrass ensemble, the Bluegrass Dukes. He does great bluegrass.Check out "The Mountain" if you haven't already heard it.Great bluegrass with Del McCoury and his band.

55. My fave is their first one with
"Dream Come True" & "Never Stop" on it. I got to saw them twice live in DC. The first show was their first album tour & it was a small jazz club & the vibe was extremely groovy :)

The second show was at a larger venue & I had recently been dumped by the same person I went to the first show with... so it just wasn't quite the same if ya know what I mean...

They had a third album, but N'dea Davenport left -- a she was the balls of the group. I mean it was a good album, but it just didn't have quite the spark.

Good to meet you :P

45. Also a band from England
The Beatles...I'm sure no one here knows them. They're pretty underground. But I think they're going to be huge.

54. Angel City
Australian band back around the early-late 80's. Pretty well known in their home country where they were/are known as "The Angels", but they didn't have much success in the USA. Changed their name to "Angel City" to avoid confusion with American glam rock/hair band "The Angels".

57. Yeah. Angel City was a great band!
Anyone in this country who had heard them, loved them, but most people hadn't heard--or even heard of--them. I searched for their albums for years, then one day I lucked out and found several of their albums, Australian versions, in a used record store. The store was in a college area, so I figured some student from Australia probably sold his albums.

60. Dr. Dre.
He's beginning to break into the mainstream now.

But seriously: Kiss Me Quick, the Glowfriends, Thank Goodness, Leaving Rouge, Wolf Eyes, The Ponys, The Sick Lipstick, Perfect Panther, Ms. John Soda, Blue Dahlia. Quite an extensive list, branching from acoustic pop to noise to no-wave to folk.

65. Dead Prez
I don't know how well known they are exactly, but I only discovered them recently. I'm not really a hip-hop fan, but these guys tell it like it is.

Artist Lyrics: Dead Prez
Song Lyrics: Propaganda
Album Lyrics: Lets Get Free

Intro: (news snippets)
"Let me now turn, to our program for the future..."
"The economy right now, is extremely supportive of the president and his
policies"
"FBI scientists have found chemical traces, consistent with a bomb or a
missle, on a piece of wreckage..."
"Police using clubs and tear gas against demonstrators..."
"They called me a mother -(bleeped out)-ing so-and-so...and a white
facist...like they said, 'you're getting some of your own medicine'..."

Singing:
Telling lies, to our vision
Telling lies, to our children
Telling lies, to our babies
Only truth, can take us away

Verse 1:
You can't fool all the people all of the time
But if you fool the right ones, then the rest will fall behind
Tell me who's got control of your mind? your world view?
Is it the news or the movie you're taking your girl to? (uh)
Know what i'm sayin cause Uncle Sam got a plan
If you examine what they tellin us then you will understand
What they plantin in the seeds of the next generation
Feeding our children miseducation
No one knows if there's UFO's or any life on mars
Or what they do when they up in the stars
Because i don't believe a word of what the president said
He filling our head with lies got us hypnotised
When he be speaking in cold words about crime and poverty
Drugs, welfare, prisons, guns and robbery
It really means us, there's no excuse for the slander
But what's good for the goose, is still good for the gander
See...

Chorus:
I don't believe Bob Marley died from cancer
31 years ago i woulda been a panther
They killed Huey cause they knew he had the answer
The views that you see in the news is propaganda

Singing:
Telling lies, to our vision
Telling lies, to our children
Telling lies, to our babies
Only truth, can take us away

Verse 2:
I don't want no computer chip in my arm
I don't wanna die by a nuclear bomb
I say we all rush the pentagon, pull out guns
And grab the intercom, my first word's will be I believe
Man made God, outta ignorance and fear
If God made man, then why the hell would he put us here?
I thought he's supposed to be the all loving
The same God who let Hitler put the Jews in the oven
We don't fall for the regular shit, they try to feed us
All this half-ass leadership, flippin position
They turn politcian and shut the hell up and follow tradition
For your TV screen, is telling lies to your vision
Every channel got some brainwashed cop shit to watch
Running up in niggas cribs claiming that they heard shots
It's a plot, but busta can you tell me who's greedier?
Big corporations, the pigs or the media?
Sign of the times, terrorism on the rise
Commercial airplanes, falling out the sky like flies
Make me wonder what secrets went down with Bob Brown (?)
Who burnt churches to the ground with no evidence found?
It's not coincidence, it's been too many studied incidents
It coulda been the Klan who put that bomb at the Olympics
But it probably was the FBI, deep at the call
Cuz if they make us all panic then they can start martial law

Chorus:
I don't believe Bob Marley died from cancer
31 years ago i woulda been a panther
They killed Huey cause they knew he had the answer
The views that you see in the news is propaganda

I don't believe Bob Marley died from cancer
31 years ago i woulda been a panther
You killed Huey cause you knew he had the answer
The views that you see in the news is muthafuckin propaganda

Singing:
Police is telling lies fooling millions
What are they teaching our kids in these school buildings?
Televised, enterprised in all the killing
Controlling our lives, this ain't living
No this ain't living

Chant:
FBI, CIA
ATF, KKK
IRS, TNT
CBS, NBC

FBI, CIA
ATF, KKK
IRS, TNT
CBS, NBC

Singing:
Telling lies, to our vision
Telling lies, to our children
Telling lies, to our babies
Only truth, can take us away

News snippet:
"uh, we view each other uh, with uh, a great love and a great understanding
and that we
try to expand this to the general, uh, black population and also people,
oppressed people all over the world, and, i think that uh, we differ from
uhmm... uh, some other groups simply because we understand the system better
than uh, most uh, groups understand the system, and uh, with this
realisation, uh, we attempt to form a strong political base based in the
community with the only strength that we have and that's the strength of uh,
a potentially destructive force if we don't get freedom."
