1. Maybe because we were in the middle of raygunpalooza when Ray died.
Both Johnny and Ray were titanic artists.

2. Because we're all a bunch of racists!

Just kidding - I think it had much to do with the proximity of Ray Charles' death with St. Ronald of Reagan's.

4. I posted the first thread on Ray in LBN
without a link. I repeated what I heard off the TV. There was at least one "Ray Charles" has died thread in every forum within 5 minutes.

I don't put much stock in any "so and so got more attention than so and so" theories because, for one thing, it happened during the Reagasm, and there was no way it could compete for attention. And also, I do remember quite a bit of tribute threads.

Reaganpalooza was part of it, but I'm sure white people do take Ray Charles for granted. Ironically, my favorite Ray Charles moment was when he played and sang Hank Williams "Your Cheating Heart" for Bush Jr at some big function. I saw it on C-Span, it truly was priceless.

8. I'm not sure this is true
I know that on Thursday (the day he passed), there were dozens of threads about it. I think there were not as many on the day of his funeral because there was very little news coverage of it. Still, during that weekend, I can't remember a time when there was not at least a couple active threads about Ray.

It might have seemed like fewer because of the hundreds of Reagan threads, but I don't think that was the case.

9. Reagan's death .
I love them both. I think that Reagan's death brought out so many trolls it was hard to keep his threads up top for more people to post on.

My all-time favorite song of Johnny’s. What an ole soul he had. I think this sums up what we democrats are all about.

Man in black

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

20. That's such an incredible song. and it's what I remember most about him.
That song will live forever..I think. Because it will always speak to someone somewhere throughout time. Thanks for the lyrics and the memory. :yourock:

10. I saw a lot of posts about both
Johnny and Brother Ray are both legendary and both will be missed. I seem to think that both got their dues in here.

12. Well, maybe I can explain it
I love Ray Charles...he is a Legend and should of had all the attention that Johnny got, BUT

30 days before Johnny passed away he was nominated for one of those MTV video awards. Timberlake won, and demanded a re-count.

Johnny's video for "Hurt" was so spellbinding, and just sorta predicted his immediate future it was disturbing. The shot of June with the lyrics "What have I become, My sweetest friend, Everyone I know goes away in the end "

June passed away four months before Johnny, he predicted his death in a way. And don't forget Rosanne Cash's song that was released in Feb/Mar 03, "September When it Comes" Her first duet with her dad, about his mortality...

From the time that June died, until Johnny died the man did nothing but record and write new songs...can you imagine what those songs are like...

Sorry if I am rambling, but Johnny was more than a singer or a Legend to me. He was Johnny Cash. The man in black...

These words were written in the 60's, but how true they are still today...

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,

13. Interesting...I think you got some of it... Cash and Charles are part of
my heritage....Love them both...but felt Charles got dissed with not the attention of Cash. But, realize that many folks love Country Music and have grown to love and understand Cash because they've gone back to "sources" and with Cash and Carter and her family and the whole heritage you wouldn't know anything.

But Ray Charles evolved to what some diss as "Pop" but his "Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music" was a "crossover" for my generation, so while Cash is my Southern roots so is Charles...I think Charles diserved better than what he got..

That's all I'm saying...but Reagan's funeral did have alot to do with how many "sound bytes" the Whore Media gives one..

I don't care..both Cash and Charles will life on in our memories. We don't need Whore Memorials with Paula Zahn and others to tell us what we already know. ::evilgrin:

14. I completely agree
They really over did it with the Reagan thing...

Did you know that Ray was working on a CD before he passed away? I'm pretty sure that he finished it. That should be one very amazing piece of work when it comes out.

My God...ain't that the truth...

Could cry your eyes out thinking about that one. What have we lost for that..what could we have done, if we'd focused on the man in black.

18. I grew up listening to Johnny Cash--my folks had all of his albums
And yes, we're white "country folk." Ray Charles was a legend, but Johnny was in my living room when I was 6 years old--what do you want?
