True story. I swear. I was at a court recorder's residence today, servicing his computer. The man I sometimes work with stopped by to help with some networking stuff, and we both left together when the job was done. (I had done nothing but resize the partitions to give him more room for files.)
Two hours later I get a frantic call on my cell-- his transcription program was working, except he couldn't get any sound (he transcribes from .wav files). After confirming over the phone that his speakers were plugged in, but still not working, he needed me to come back. No problem.
I got there a half hour later, walked up to the computer, and discovered-- he'd turned his speakers off.
I pushed the button, asked him to play a file, and his jaw hit the floor. How the hell can you even begin to be diplomatic when something like that happens?
I tried, and I did a fair job of not busting out laughing. I ended up blaming it on the guy I worked with, because he'd been behind the computer, installing wiring. (I didn't really believe it, but he hadn't come back with me, and I figured it was a way to let the client save some face.)
It seemed to work-- I'm going back tomorrow to fix some more stuff for him. Hope I can keep from laughing....
