Much of the text is in French, and it was not uncommon around the time of the French Revolution for books to be covered in human skin. I remember reading an article about this so time ago (no I don't remember where). According to that, there are 3 or 4 books in the Harvard (or Yale?) libraries that are bound in human skin. Friggin' creepy.
