I grew up in Greensboro. Nice place. Probably more colleges per capita than any place I've ever lived.

As other's have mentioned, you're close to the mountains and the beach. Being close to a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is worth 20 points, at least. You're not far from Winston-Salem (great classical and jazz music scene), Chapel Hill, or the Hollering Contest at Spivey's Corner.

One other thing. Once you get out in the country in Central or West Central NC, it's beautiful beyond words.

The Greensboro papers have been full of Letters to the Editor extolling the virtues of George W. Bush for the past 5 years. Greensboro is a college town, including a Quaker college, and there is culture and diversity, but it is at its core a working-class Bible belt city.

I was there for three years and had a good time, but keep in mind I was in college. I would not call Greensboro a progressive city overall, it is not San Francisco, or Iowa City, or Chapel Hill, or Athens, GA, but it is not Fayetteville, either. You will find a way to fit in and flourish.

You see LA is great because once you leave LA to a surrounding city you still find people with brains. In NC once you leave Greenboro it's pretty much like deliverence(well not that extreme).

Whatever you do though don't go to SC.

22. NC is a great state! You'd enjoy the living in such a beautiful place.

The NC mountains include the Great Smokey Mtns. Nat'l Park and the Joyce Kilmer forest as well. The coast and outer banks are spectacular. TN, VA, SC and GA are close by. SC has an incredible coast and history as does all of the South. Have you visited the Biltmore Estate? It's not to be missed. NC has great colleges and universities. The historical sites and natural beauty are varied and really awesome.

Plus, it's where I was born so I'm partial! ;) I'm in NE GA and I love to visit Western NC.

Don't let DU's anti-Southern crowd turn you off. (They've probably never been here.)

Greensboro's full of Freepers. It also has some great DUers and others who are like-minded. However, if you're used to any kind of nightlife, culture, arts, or good shopping, be prepared to go to Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh, or elsewhere to get it. I've lived in the Greensboro/High Point area since 1989, and I can tell you honestly that there was much more to do when I lived in Chapel Hill.

On the upside, the cost of living is lower and the air is somewhat cleaner. You'll have four seasons, but recently the winters haven't been as cold. (Can you say "global warming"?) Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem will get snow once or twice a year on average. Some years (like this one), there is no snow to speak of; some years, it won't go away.

BTW, I love SC. It is a beautiful state. Mr. CB and I go to Hunting Island and Bueafort at least once a year. I really want to see the Congaree Swamp but I'm gonna have to wait until after mosquito season.

Greensboro is fine. I went there to school. That area, The Triad (Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem) is a little more conservative than here. But the business end is good, so you might find a job quicker.

If you want something akin to San Fran on the East Coast though, Durham and Chapel Hill are your best bets.
