FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Two men are facing felony charges of animal cruelty for killing a duck they said kept stealing their bait while they were fishing, authorities said.
Santos Murcia-Rosa, 23, and Roberto Landaverde-Mancia, 22, both of North Lauderdale, were arrested Monday, the Broward Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The pair were fishing at a lake in North Lauderdale when ducks began taking bread they were using as bait, according to the statement. One duck they tried to move away with a stick kept returning and the men started hitting the duck, according to a statement Murcia-Ross gave detectives.
The animal cruelty charge is a third degree felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison, the sheriff's office said. Murcia-Rosa was being held on $10,000 bond. Landaverde-Mancia was released on $2,500 bond, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's office said. It was not clear why the bond amount was different and not known if they had lawyers.
