Ever know an individual who was really arrogant but you didn't know why?

There's these people I know, they exude extreme cockiness but I can't figure out why they're so arrogant. It's not as if they're doing anything spectacular or are super attractive or anything. So. Why the attitude?

Anyone know people like that?

I don't get it.

1. Yes. I'd chalk it up to lack of self esteem, or just plain stupidity.

2. Yeah. I had a boyfriend like that for two years.

He was very lazy a lot of the time and yet he confused "pride" with "dignity". Dignity's good, but I don't know where this "pride" came from. It manifested itself as an unfortunate refusal to apologize and other really unattractive habits.

4. It's a particular strain of ignorance that I find to be most

amusing.If you'll notice,the less a person knows, the less he knows about his own ignorance.
Most of the people whom I respect for their wisdom, are very humble and appreciative what they can learn and very far away from arrogance.

10. There was a customer that came into the grocery store

I used to work at on a regular basis. Whenever he was in the store, there would always be an intercom page for "Dr. ******, you have a phone call at the office." Very strange, as he had both a pager and a cell phone at the time. It was always his wife, making sure that we paged "Dr. ******".

Arrogant prick used to argue with the help all the time over the freshness of the product, used to return half-eaten food saying it was spoiled, tough, rotten, what have you. We tried to tell the owner that this guy was scamming the store for refunds, but it fell on deaf ears. He got more free groceries every week than he paid for.

Anyway, found out some time later that this "Doctor" was a fraud. He was some supposed guru in the field of corporate security, not an MD at all like we all supposed, and was hired for a very high-profile job as chief of security at one of the local museums after being fired from the same position at a prestigious university. Seems his credentials were all either out-and-out fraudulent, or from some mail-order diploma mill. He was making a speech at his new place of employment in front of a very high-profile crowd, and made a total fool of himself. Only then did they decide to investigate his credentials, and was promptly dismissed.....also was arrested for attempted insurance fraud after burning down a century home that he was trying restore, but ran out of money when it got too expensive for him.

I feel now that people that are cocky and arrogant are scared little frauds, afraid that they'll be found out.

It was just a front to cover his feelings of worthlessness. Poor guy was severely depressed.

I read a university study that proved (sorry, don't have a link) that there is no relationship at all between confidence and competence. In other words, if you are born with the "confidence" gene, no amount of fucking up in every aspect of life will diminish your confidence. This came as no surprise, I've known several of these folks throughout my life.

Kind of describes our president. Confident, with absolutely no reason to be, since nothing he has ever done has worked out.

... is merely an manifestation of a little too much confidence IMHO. Think about what arrogance really is - a condition of thinking that you are never wrong.

But I just dislike arrogant people in general, even those who could give somewhat justified reasons for being the way they are. However, I think our society, more and more, encourages people (especially men) to behave in this way, so I think it's going to become a more common disposition as even those who aren't naturally super-confident/arrogant try to behave in a way they are told will make them more accepted and respected by society. While I find these kinds of people's behavior laughable (if at the same time, in some cases, somewhat intimidating) I do think a large portion of society responds in the way that they want them to, and thus they will continue to behave in this manner.

i have known a few that have been 'spectacular and attractive' too. i don't care if they feel justified in their arrogance. they're still arrogant jerkys. the problem with arrogant people is, they believe they are superior to everyone making them close minded and in my observations, cruel.

Unfortunately I fall for it every time. Then I think, why am I attracted to this individual anyway? I think that pisses me off more than his undeserved arrogance.
