Poll question: Autumn or Fall?

Timely, ain't it?

In case it isn't obvious, I'm asking which term you prefer for the season between summer and winter. I'd love to fill out the other 8 slots with witty alternatives, but I'm damned if I can think of any. Similarly, register Other replies (eg if where you live there are 9 months of summer and three of winter or vice versa) by replying below.

1. Autumn, because I'm British

The term "fall" isn't used here for the 3rd season.

The falling off of the year. Autumn came from Latin (autumnus) via Old French (autompne)

Interesting that we colonists kept the older word.

Except in the little ditty to remember which way to move one's clocks... "spring forward, fall back" - it loses some of its (immsense) charm and wit to say "spring forward, autumn back" afterall.

9. Yes - I was immensely pleased when I learned that mnemonic

because without it I could never remember which way the clock changes went. I really wish they wouldn't bother with it.

7. They are different.

Autumn is that cooler crisper season when the leaves turn scarlet and gold and \rustle under your feet when you walk. The air is clean and clear.

Fall is when the leave hit the ground, everything turns brown and it gets cold.


We get 4 seasons her, but when I lived on the Prairies we got 10 months of winter and 2 months of poor sledding.

10. I miss autumn in Ontario

I thought our autumn would only be a week here - 30c one Friday, the next weekend snow was forecast; luckily didn't happen.
We've had a couple of weeks of it already. Perhaps we can stretch it out to a month?!!!? :bounce:

I should correct you here: that should be 2 months of road construction. ;-)

14. It's still summer here

It was above 20C today, and sunny at times. It is most unseasonal - this is the longest summer I remember (it started being hot at the beginning of June).

17. It's close to 20 today here

but it was rainy and cold for almost a week. x(

There were a few times it was quite unnerving...my windshield wipers couldn't keep up with the rain. Not fun, especially at night...

I'm doing well. Still have my fingers crossed about the apartment...and I've got a fondue party tonight with lots of chocolate and fruit...how could I not be looking forward to that? :9 :bounce:
