I want the Gators to play Boise State
Ohio State is being embarrassed.

Playoff.

2. At least under the old system
BYU was able to bring the WAC a NC twenty years ago. Under the BCS, that will never happen again. National Championships are only for schools from BCS conferences.

But yeah, time for a playoff and a true, not mythical, national champion.

6. National Champions will be mythical, with or without this stupid playoff crap.
Too many teams, not enough common opponents. Someone will always be left out. Then there's the SEC. The top three to four teams in the SEC are always as good as any winner in any other division, but no playoff system would choose the fourth place team in the SEC over other conference winners in the PAC 10 or Big 10.

It's all a joke. Go back to the old bowl system, let bowl games try for interesting matchups, and get over these silly fantasies of a national championship. It will always be a joke.

12. It's a darn shame
How Div I-AA manges to crown a true champion, along with Div II and III (and every High School league in every state), but somehow Div I-A just can't figure it out.

Take all the conference champs (not just BCS conferences - all of them) plus a handful of at large picks and dump them into a 16 team tournament. Three rounds of playoffs in December and then have the NC game on NYD.

Or some other system. Anything but what we have now.

13. It's a darn shame grown men worry about this rather than about the academic
standing of a university. But we are Rome, we must have breadmakers and circus clowns, rather than citizens who can think and read.

Dic I-AA might "crown" a "true champion," but the title is just as mythical.

16. FWIW, I give twice as much
to my university's college of engineering than I do to athletics.

Never mind that it's the love of money that has us mired in the bowls anyway.

15. it's obvious that you are so right
the only reason this doesn't happen is because the powers that control BILLIONS of dollars don't think it would be a good idea to change. Kind of the same thinking that happened in the 40's or 50's when lynchings happened.

Don't change the good ole boy network.

sumpins just ain't right.

fuck that and that brand of thinking.

wake up.

25. Well, then, figuratively?
You are arguing that the BCS system needs to be changed because "something ain't right," and you are saying it isn't changing because there are billions of dollars involved in the way it is done now. There's an assumption there that something should change because as you say, "something isn't right." But what's not right? Some sports guys have to argue over whether a fictional national championship should have gone to one team instead of another? That's not a serious enough problem to mandate a change.

Why does there need to be a change? Why does there need to be a national champion, especially when the title itself is fictitious? The only argument is to make the fans happy. Okay, in a professional business, that's a good argument. But we are talking about universities, whose primary purpose is to educate people and train them to become better citizens and more productive members of society. Sports is a part of that--as long as opportunity is provided equally across genders--and there's nothing wrong with universities wanting a great team, and making money off their teams. But when you start arguing that the whole structure of the university sports setup should be changed, not to make sports better at each university, or to give successful universities more money, or to educate students better, or anything else involving the purpose of universities, but instead to make a bunch of fans and sports announcers happy, then you've jumped the shark. Universities are about the schools themselves, not a unch of sports fans.

The universities and the NCAA think the bowl system is the best thing for them. That should be the end of the story.

7. unless one wants to believe
in the hype..........

Boise State is the National Champ this year.

Forget the hype. Forget the propaganda.

A winner is a winner. (unless the BCS says different)

24. yep
The only reason Florida will win the "championship" outright is because the voters are contractually obligated to vote for the winner of this game.

Some poll.

I hope the sports media emphasize how tenuous Florida's claim on the "title" is.

yep!

I am loving watching Ohio State get it's ass kicked only because it intensifies the need for a playoff system. BCS can eat my toenail snoof.

21. The AP poll should be interesting
The Coaches Poll has to vote the NC game winner #1 but the sportswriters can vote for anyone.

23. here's what I wonder
how can any team be expected to keep it's fire going after 50+ days off.

It's crazy to have this game happen the way it has after so much time.

In a way, it doesn't, because of that reason, mean anything.

It's a big show. Six weeks without playing. It makes no sense.
