They can't play football if they're not envisioning something to hump? Is that why they slap each other on the ass all the time?

4. football != cheerleading
There are a lot of football fans who can't stand sideline cheerleaders. Some of the more successful franchises in NFL history don't have them.

University of Kentucky has been at the top of the sport for years.

Tony Basil Cheered in H.S. I can't remember what squad is with her in that video, but by today's standards, they suck.

I hope you were serious, lol, because this is a serious answer.

38. I have no dictionary definition in front of me
but I just don't have the gut feeling it is a sport. For me, something needs to be
1. competitive
2. athletic
3. strategic (needed to overcome the other competitor)

Many things that a lot of people call sports meet 1 and 2 but not 3. Cheerleading, golf, gymnastics, bowling. I would never deny the athleticism and dedication needed to be good in cheerleading. Just doesn't feel like a sport to me.

41. But, to me, if you go weak on one of those elements
then you could go weak on one of the other two. Then poker is a sport. And academic debate. And trivia contests. And playing video games.

42. I Go With The Idea Of Athleticism
I don't see poker or trivia as athletic, they are very competitive, and they have strategy, I don't see cheerleading as a competition as having no strategy. However, I'm basing this on little knowledge of the subject, and probably my memory's source is "Bring It On" more than any other thing.

from the days when girls couldn't play sports and were relegated to cheering on the guys.
They keep trying to make it into a "sport" all it's own. What a crock.

This is not your grandmother's cheering squad.

Besides, even in the "bad old days" of sexism, there were boy cheerleaders.

26. Well it's not necessary, but it's fun
People have a lot of fun cheerleading, and it's good exercise. Being a part of it can help raise self esteem...

I had fun watching the cheerleaders and the dance group in school, and not just because I like the ladies, lol. I know cheerleaders are stereotyped as being the mean girls in school but that's not always true- when I was in school, it wasn't the cheerleaders who terrorized me, it was other girls. A friend of mine in jr. high who had really low self esteem became a cheerleader- she didn't think she would even make it for lots of reasons, mainly she didn't think she was skinny or pretty enough. But she was good at it, so she wasn't rejected like she thought she would be. And it did a lot for her, she felt really good about herself afterwards.

And outside of school, when it comes to the NFL and whatnot, I dunno. They look like they are having a great time out there and people like to watch them, I see nothing wrong with that.

I can't stand watching sports, especially on TV. But I like the girls. Not only because they are usually hot, but because I love human circus acts, and thats what cheerleading is these days. Acrobats are cool.
