On Your 40th Birthday.....what would you have wanted your Parents to Say to You!
No matter how scurrilous or saintly your parents were...what would you have liked to hear when you opened your Birthday Card?

20. No, sadly my parents were both dead by the time I turned 40.
So they didn't get to say anything.

But I'm sure they were thinking something like this:

Rabrrrrrr's dad: "Well, he's not Saddam... that's really good... and he hasn't started a massive genocide yet like Hitler, so that's good... but ultimately, I think we have to be thankful he isn't matcom..."

Rabrrrrrr's mom: "Yeah, I gotta go with that, too. I was just talking with Hitler over at the banquet hall by Doubting Thomas' House of Lube, and at least he's, you know, likable. I mean, in comparison."

9. when Mrs Matcom turned 40.....
I had a surprise party for her and the cake was a photo cake off a pic her mother gave me of her at 18 months sitting on the toilet (yes, pants at knees).

so, here were 30 or so of her closest friends and I presented the photo cake with the caption: "Holy Shit! Mrs Matcom's 40!"

yeah, I lived. barely.

17. "Happy Birthday. Love, Mom & Dad"
I told everyone who knows me that I most certainly DID NOT WANT ANYTHING even remotely resembling "Lordy, Lordy, Look Who's 40" on any card, announcement, banner or what-have-you.

You know what? Everyone wisely complied with that request. :)

My parents treated me to ice cream on my 40th birthday, in the form of a rather generous Dairy Queen gift certificate.

considering she's dead. :P

I wouldn't have paid attention to whatever my father said...I don't even know if "sorry" would mean anything anymore....

how much they loved me and how much they liked having me as a son. Very nice.

27. My parents sent very mixed messages...
It was like "When are you going to grow up and get a life?" and "OMG, our kid is forty, we are like OLD people" and "Our grandkids are wonderful, you guys are such good parents!"

Well, the last one is a function of the first one, and the second one I didn't need to hear, and besides my parents don't act like boring old grown ups either. My oldest teenager is more grown up than my mom has ever been.
