Police Shut Down Highway To Rescue Kitten

<snip>

Six lanes of full-speed, weaving, Auckland traffic were no match for a kitten called Lucky and his motorcycling saviours.

The scrawny feline was rescued in an unusual police action yesterday morning as he scurried among vehicles on the main road to Auckland airport.

Some motorists dialled 111, while others called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

SPCA staff arrived on a rescue mission but thought it too dangerous to cross Hugh Watt Drive to retrieve the cat cowering under a median barrier in the middle of six lanes of traffic in a 100kmh zone.

Two policemen on motorbikes blocked off the road for a few minutes to get to the kitten, which had been stranded for more than an hour.

Staff at the emergency call centre had already named him Lucky.

4. Sounds very familiar - here's my story:
One fine August morning, my wife and I were driving into work early, crossing Richmond's Nickel Bridge, when we both spotted something right in the middle of the bridge. And when I say right in the middle, I mean that literally! In almost the exact center of the bridge, huddled between the double yellow lines, was a very small, furry object. As the object did not move, I thought it was a toy. I slowed down as I approached the "toy," and as I looked out the driver's window, the "toy" looked up at me! I said, "It's a kitten, and it's alive." We did not need to discuss what to do; as soon as we had crossed the bridge, we turned around immediately to retrieve the kitten.

Though our immediate concern was that the kitten was severely injured and suffering, we knew we could not just leave him there regardless. Stopping in the middle of the bridge, I jumped out and ran to the kitten. To our surprise and joy, he was completely uninjured, save for a scrape on his nose (this is remarkable, considering he was literally inches from cars traveling both ways at 40-50 miles per hour)! As I was now blocking the entire bridge during morning rush hour, I had to endure many angry car horns and comments; however, I held the kitten aloft for all to see, and several people started cheering! Within a few hours, he had his first veterinary experience, and was given a clean bill of health. He was very thin, and a bit roughed up, but we gave him some food and water, and suddenly he was a little purr machine!

We brought him home, named him Charlie, and the rest is history. It only took a few weeks to integrate him into the household, and he loves to play with his brother and sister cats, Tate and Hannah. He is now a very healthy, happy cat (and he seems to like beds and sofas much, much more than the asphalt of the Nickel Bridge)!

Charlie, day one

Charlie, today

6. His big brother, Tate, always tries to act like he doesn't like Charlie
then we catch them playing, chasing, rolling and, just last night, singing to each other! Tate was on the second floor, top of the stairs, "singing" to Charlie who, sitting at the bottom of the stairs, was "singing" back! They have never done this before and, even though it was very late, we just had to sit up and enjoy it!

19. Good for you! You da man!
That is one lucky kitty. I hate to think of how he might have gotten there in the first place.

I, too, have a similar situation to yours. Cleo, the middle cat who wants to dominate, still hisses and growls at little Amber (right), even after four years. I have, however, caught them wrestling in the basement when Cleo thought there was no one around. They are such strange little beasts.

11. My best friend and I stopped traffic on a road and rescued a cat once.
She was in the median and scared paralyzed. We blocked traffic with our car and chased her into the gutter on the side of the road where we could catch her. She was terrified but came willingly. We kept her for months until the no-kill cat shelter was able to take her and she was placed in a home (we already had two cats).
